How does one go about removing wallpaper. It is only one layer, but I want it GONE so I can paint instead.
Any ideas please!!!!
Thanks! |

| They have a steamer that you can rent to help release the glue. If you really want to save money, you can use a regular clothes iron, but it'll take forever. -- Things are not what they appear to be: nor are they otherwise. Surangama Sutra |

I just removed wallpaper in 5 rooms, using the "Downy" method, and it beats the heck out of using a steamer or scoring device, or anything else!
Basically, take about 2 gallons of warm water, add a good 1/2 cup of Downy fabric softener to the water and mix it in.
I use a spray bottle to then spray the mix on the wall, some folks prefer a sponge.
Let it soak about 15-20 minutes, and then take a thin, wide-blade (4-6 inch) putty knife and away it goes!
After you remove the paper, take just plain warm water and clean off any remaining glue residue, and you're done.
I was quite skeptical about it when given the method, but I can tell you its the way to go! |

| That's good to know, Matt. I've never heard of that. Of course, the advantage to the steamer method is that, if you are so inclined, you can let the steamer double as a sauna. -- Things are not what they appear to be: nor are they otherwise. Surangama Sutra |

True!! This was the first time I tried it, and I was impressed.
Just Google "downy wallpaper removal" and you' find all sorts of places that recommend it. |

| reply to Dominokat I just printed out mattmag s idea.. God willing it will work.
Most of the "edges" are pealing anyway.
I am more afraid what the walls look like to paint. DoI need to fill things or what? |

| reply to Dominokat Nice to know also, I removed a wallpaper once that had no sizing underneath, what a mess...had to repair part of the drywall along with it. Don't forget to put up sizing before wallpapering again, however I think I will go with paint the next go-round. |

If you paint over the glue it will eventually show through the paint. |

| reply to Dominokat Downy method works well, but like all strippers, it needs to get to the glue to work. If it's a vinyl backed wallpaper (heavy, or textured, usually) - need to use a tool of some sort to prepare it.
I used this one to remove 2 rooms worth of wallpaper earlier this year - worked very well.

| reply to Dominokat You guys need the "Paper Tiger":
»paint-and-supplies.hardwarestore···369.aspx
This is run over the surface and it perforates the paper, allowing the liquid to get to the adhesive.

| reply to Dominokat I've used Dif before. It worked very well! Just spray and let it sit for a minute or so then start pulling the wallpaper off.

It is pretty cheap wallpaper. It has been up for over 10 years at least and most of the seams are rolling so..... |

| reply to Dominokat i've used teh steamer, the downy method, water/vinegar mix, and just plain old peel and scrape. not matter what, it is NOT a quick an easy job if the paper was hung correctly.
you will likely gouge teh wall in a few places, but that is easily patched by floating out the area. i would prime it after you get all teh paper/glue off, otherwise you will use a lot of paint. -- Lack of Preparation on YOUR Part does NOT Constitute an Emergency on Mine! |

| reply to ergibbs You can purchase a steamer at Lowes for about $70.00 rather than rent. It takes a while to strip paper so a few days rental will pay for the machine real quick.
And as others said: be sure to wash & scrape the walls well. Residual paste is nothing but trouble. We painted a bath that had some dry paste left on the walls in spots and the paint turned to slime as it was trying to dry. Nasty mess. -- The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits. |
