Major acquisition announced late afternoon today: »www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=···Lc&pos=1
This may have major implications for those of you who use Black & Decker owned brands such as Dewalt, Porter Cable, Delta. I predict at least one of these brands will be on the chopping block as cost cutting measures are implemented as they usually are after a major acquisition.

1 edit | reply to ArthurS Wow, wasn't aware that Black and Decker had so much of the tool market.
Guess I'll be switching to Sears.. Granted, I doubt Sears builds their own tools.
Then after reading this, I think the CEOs of both companies are dumb asses. quote: Deutsche Bank and Goldman, Sachs & Co. advised Stanley on the transaction and Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP gave legal counsel. Black & Deckers financial adviser was J.P. Morgan Securities Inc. Hogan & Hartson LLP and Miles & Stockbridge P.C. provided legal advice.
There are a couple of names that owe US tax payers a shit load of money. I wouldn't ask them how to wipe my ass. But yet the dumb ass Ceos went to them for advice... typical. |

| reply to ArthurS said by ArthurS :I'm predicting Porter Cable will be first to be cut, and the remains folded into Delta. Doubt it. Delta is primarily freestanding machinery like table saws, lathes, dust collection, etc. Porter-Cable is the handheld and portable tool brand. That's not to say that there isn't any overlap, but rolling one into the other would destroy considerable name recognition. Ditto rolling either of those into Dewalt or Black and Decker.
All four of those brand names have huge brand recognition which is likely the main reason why Stanley purchased them. Stanley already had the capability of going to the same suppliers as the B&D family of companies and getting their own tools, or just partnering with B&D to rebadge existing tools under a different label similar to how Sears does their power tools. But they wanted the brand names. |

The cheap tools/cars/equipment sell the most because people prefer cheap price over quality. Since they sell more they get the upper hand in the market, and they are the ones that survive and start to buy out other brands. Look at Goodman in the HVAC world for a perfect example. The B&D brand, while fine for hobby and home use, is not a great professional brand in terms of quality. But they are a major household brand name, and will be the last of that group to go anywhere. -- "On a motorcycle, you're penetrating distance right along with the machine. | I lost any chance of respect for the Black and Decker name when I saw they made a toaster.

The funny thing is, when B&D launched the DeWalt line, the tools were all rebadged Black & Deckers.
It was a brilliant marketing move, and the contractor-types fell for it hook, line and sinker. I wonder what they will do next, since nearly everything made by Stanley and B&D is Chinese crap. -- We were taking a vote when the ground came up and hit us. |

They've made all sorts of kitchen and household appliances for years. Why is making a toaster all that odd? B&D isn't marketed towards seasoned professionals in the construction or culinary industries. It's marketed to John and Suzie Public that wouldn't know a quality made tool if their lives depended on it. |

| reply to Dennis actually, they DON'T make toasters anymore. Or coffee makers, or pretty much any home products.
I used to use their kitchen appliances almost exclusively, until I found I was having to replace them way too often. Looking for parts, I found that B&D had sold the line (and their name).
I still buy some of their stuff, because it has features I really want, but I'm a careful shopper, and I don't give them too many second chances. |

Very true, a few of their tool products (light-bar for example) are made by other companies and are only re-branded.
I still have a very old B&D 3/8" drill and jigsaw, both are metal and both still work better then any of their newest plastic offerings. To bad, the name no longer carries a cent of credibility.
B&D whored out their name to a company called Applica, which makes (or re-brands) kitchen appliances. Applica has poor customer service, it shouldn't take 10 months and 15 phone calls just to replace a bread makers bread pan.
Porter Cable, Delta (provided you got the mid level products or higher) are still very good, in contrast I can't think of a single Stanley product I would want - the name is as good as mud. |

AFAIK, Stanley doesn't make power tools, do they? (I'm not including flashlights, laser levels, etc as power tools) Looking at their website, I don't see anything that people would consider a power tool. |
