| Possible for someone abroad to get a work from home job?
Is it possible for someone abroad to get a work from home job in the US/CAN? Are there any rules against this? I have worked for many US based companies as techsupport engineer from indian BPOs. I was wondering if I can join any US based company directly and work from home in India. I can get a 16 mbps connection for about $100/month here. I would like to do this because even the lowest wage dollar/hour would translate to a huge income jump for me, once converted to the local currency. |

| I never had any luck looking for a "work from home" type job. The places that say they have the referrals want to charge you, and others want you to sell Amway or Avon or answer on-line surveys.
Best bet is to look into something with billing, IE medical billing. Though you may need a certain skill set for that.
Good luck. -- I want Obama money. "wheres it comming from?" I dunno, his stash. I don't care, I just want obama money. Shows the lack of education and the greed of people. Hand outs from the government comes from your pay check and wallet. Think about it. |

| reply to pizzaeater I based myself out of a 2nd home when I was doing extensive work in Central and South America. I still use it several times a year as I have a support-management job which requires me to be on the phone/internet ~10 hrs/day. Best bet would be to base yourself in the U.S. and slowly make the move to India. I'll clue you right now - as soon as management finds you are in a different area, they will want to renegotiate your pay/benefits package. |

| reply to pizzaeater Are you a US citizen or resident? Since the job is technically based in the US the company would be subject to US hiring laws which restrict hiring to US citizens, residents or certain visa holders. In addition even though you are in India you would be subject to some level of federal and even state taxation.
Now if the company hires you as an outside contractor (similar to how the BPOs and other foreign call centers are hired) you're treated in the same fashion. It's possible however that you would have to establish yourself as an Indian company for legal reasons.
The other option is for the company to create an Indian "office" and go through the legal process of operating in India.
The end result of both options means that the company is aware you're outside the US and they would lower pay appropriately.
Even if you get past the legal issues you will have 1 more issue. Most of the "work at home" jobs that require no physical presence have already been outsourced to India or another foreign country. The majority of the jobs left would require some kind of presence at the company offices. -- CCNA, Comtrain Certified Tower Climber |

| reply to pizzaeater If some broad wants to work at home, she should get in that kitchen and make me some pie!
Seriously, jobs are going to India because American companies don't want to pay American prices for the services.
If you want to provide contract services, you'll need thousands of low paid workers, and the lowest bid gets the contract. If you can get ten thousand people willing to work for $2 a day, I am sure you will win a big contract. -- The first time history repeats itself, it is a tragedy. The second time, it is a farce. |
