Rochester speed question

I've been in contact support regularly for the past 10 months - about every 7-8 weeks - about getting better speed. I'm under a mile to the CO and Frontier did a major line replacement project on the poles and to the homes 3 years ago. I was told by the line techs that we should all be seeing better speeds as a result of replacing the aged copper.

At one time - 4 to 5 years ago - I saw speeds in the 6mb to 7mb range. Sometimes speedtest would hit 1000. Now I've been getting a consistent 5mb for some reason ever since then. I've had DSL since 2000 and stayed through the terrible Cisco 677 DSL modem fiasco.

Anyhow I'm trying to pin down why my SNR is always in the 8 to 12 range every time I contact support. Since I'm in Rochester I have an Efficient 5200 and it works well enough.

The tech said that is all the speed that can be provisioned - even though I'm about 4000 feet from the CO.

I have to complaint about the reliability. Just what could be the root cause of my terrible SNR.

Mind posting up your DSL line stats for us to see? Also if you have telephone service (I'm assuming so), are you hearing static or crackling on the line? How do the stats look at the NID (if you've checked)?

Thanks for the reply. The problem is that since it is a 5200 - hence I'm bridged - it doesn't have a login area to check stats that I'm aware of. They get the stats for me when they check my circuit.

No noise, no drops, steady connection. I just don't think I'm getting the best out of the connection though.

Ah. If I'm remembering correctly the 5200s (at least some of them) do have an admin interface located at »192.168.254.254/ with it being bridged is another story, where you'll need to reset it or assign your PC a static IP address into the modem's possible range to grab those. This FAQ might be particularly helpful.

»Efficient Networks Forum FAQ

But that's all I need are those stats, so that I can figure out what's going on. If your 5200 doesn't have any way of grabbing the stats what so ever, see if you can borrow another DSL modem which can and sync it up.

No - this modem doesn't have that ability. Believe me I've been through the whole mess of trying to do it - including the comprehensive links on this website. It's only the third DSL modem I've had since I've been with Frontier. The original Cisco 677 (2000-2001) was a piece of garbage that was super sensitive to any line noise/static. Thank goodness they did away with them within 18 months. The first 5200 died a horrible death in summer 2004 during a direct hit lightening strike - it sound like a baby rattle after that one. The one I'm on now is the replacement.

I purchased a zoom dsl modem as a backup unit within the last year. I had it setup and could get all types of information from the management panel but couldn't get online with it until I turned it into a bridge.

So here is what I found out after speaking with a knowledgable tech rep last night. Even though I'm a 4000 foot straight shot down the road from the CO my loop link is almost 9000. A line tech is supposed to be stopping by today to address this.

Let us know how things go with that. A loop length of 9000ft would certainly indicate something is up with the lines, probably a bridge tap or of course weird routing of the wire.

As for your Zoom DSL modem, if the VPI/VCI settings were correct and the modem supported PPPoE/PPPoA it should have worked. For the record, I'm still using my 4 year old SpeedStream 6520.

The techs stopped by and replaced the interface on the outside of my house with a whole house splitter. They ran some tests and there are no bridges on my line. They will be stopping by in the morning with a different modem that will allow me to get my own stats - I believe it will be the gigaset. I told them I don't want to get rid of my existing networking equipment - it works too well. They said I don't have to activate the wireless component and just use it as a bridge like the 5200.

The techs were good to speak with and fully understood what I was requesting, but more importantly why.

Post up on what the stats look like from the new Gigaset once they hand it to you. Frontier's techs are pleasant people. None the less, if they do give you the Gigaset to keep, you're free to bridge it or more back to your old equipment, or of course use the best setup possible for your line.

I haven't set it up yet - been brushing up on the Gigaset configuration before I hook it up as a bridge.

Due to the location of my networking equipment, I'd like to hook it up to my existing router and get stats without having to do the cable switch method.

I saw a post by Dr. Olds a while back about doing that, but it wasn't clear how exactly to do it.

Can you post up the perma-link to Dr. Old's post?

Smith6612 - you were the last post in the thread I'm referring to.

The above screen shot is from earlier this morning. I hooked up the se567 last night for the first time. I got rid of the PPPoE and made it strictly a bridge. Still don't have a grasp on the VLAN/Port forwarding to be able to monitor the Gigaset through my existing wireless router while it is in bridge mode. That will be for another day.

I also have a Zoom 5615 bridge/modem as well. It gives excellent stats too. So over the course of an hour I had the 5200, the Zoom 5615, and the Gigaset 567 all connected directly to my PC and wireless router. The only problem I had with the Gigaset is when I had it strictly bridged and connected directly to my PC is that I couldn't browse. Connected to the router I could browse bridged no issue. The zoom and the 5200 had no issue directly connected to a PC or to the wireless router.

The zoom actually has a menu showing either interleaved or fast path - I was showing as interleaved.

I contacted Frontier support chat while the gigaset was attached. They ran some tests from there end and my snr was going as low as 2 to as high as 15 over the course of about 15 minutes. They verified it at there end as well. I didn't get screen shots of that though. I asked about being on interleaved vs fast path - the tech asked how I knew that. After some discussion he decided to open a ticket.

Also I found that Frontiers loop length - which I've seen different interpretations of - is the total continuous cable length from the CO to me and back to the CO - which mine is closer to 8500 according to the tech that was out last week. I've seen it explained as the length from the CO to the outlet and I've seen it explained as the total cable length from the CO to my outlet and back to the CO.

So my stats up/down link is pretty much where it's been for a while. They can't do anything about the speed until they get a handle on my snr.

Yep. For the most part the upstream does have room to be boosted. Your line looks like the stats that my Frontier line gives, however I'm running at a slower sync rate but with FastPath. FastPath will cut down on the latency for you, so once Frontier can get your SNR taken care of over your loop (ADSL2+, remote nearby, shorter way to route the cable?) you'll be all set to go.

Frontier - great service techs.

Well my SE567 has been online for ~5 days now. The modem stats a couple of nights ago showed I was synced at over 7000000 downstream. My other stats didn't change. They still can't put me on fastpath because of my SNR.

Satisfied DSL subscriber for 10 years.

Refreshing to hear someone with a positive Frontier experience. Thanks.
