Try Blue Ray rip and you'll see what i am talking about much better quality.

I know it takes a long time on slow DSL connection, but if you have 10mbits connection you are in great shape man.

I have seen a lot more Blu ray rips than you can imagine. My claim is dvd rips are not low quality. I did not say blu ray aren't better in quality (they are).

Any rip can vary in quality depending on the settings used to rip. A DVDRip doesn't HAVE to be low/poor quality.

The quality can also vary wildly depending on the release group as well. There are some groups that definitely care more about quality than some others.

And with regards to Bluray, I only download something that big if I intend to watch it more than once. A lot of things get seen once and then tossed to make room for more!

Well yeah, who do you think it is that determines the settings?

Yes that is true. But there are standards for every release group. You can't release a poor quality rip without getting nuked.

A DVDrip compressed down to 700MB is likely going to be of low quality. Unless of course the individual or group who ripped it does a proper encode job. Then it can be made to be fairly decent in quality.

I try to avoid downloading those and go for straight DVDs, or h.264 720p Blu-Ray rips (which while not as good as the original format, are a decent compromise for the size and file quality).

And the minimum size I make most of my own DVD rips for use on portables, etc., is 900MB, with longer movies being either 1100MB or 1400MB.

Technically, you could compress a blu-ray down to 700MB too.

So of course a 8.5GB file is going to look better than a 700MB file. Duh.

i'm not talking about downloading. i'm talking about ripping DVDs and the quality of ripping.

but if someone is on 56k or using a 3G data plan (capped at 5Gig download) to download a 700mb (CD size) rip of a movie, they should spend 10-20 dollars more per month and get with the 'high speed/no caps' program.
hell, i don't even know where to start looking for DVD rips @ 700mb.
