ophelus posted : I've come to the conclusion that I'm no longer into archiving.. course if I had say archived the rare HD images I downloaded like Star Trek Season 1 they'd kind of be collector's items (now released in blueray)

But the point to understand about usenet data collecting at least is.. it all comes back around..

But in my hey day I burned 1000+ divx movies 2001-2004 and then started on DVD's in 2004 least another 300+ and now I don't bother.. still can't find some rare movies I archived like "Heart of Midnight"

Anyway.. I agree don't download DVD unless you have too.. stick to blueray or maybe x264 is safer (sometimes blue ray's just don't play right :() DVD's are only made for a pixel resolution I believes tops of 720x520 unless you running 800x600 on your computer.. that blows as a resolution :) and my computer is my TV I don't bother to separate them in different rooms :) and would employ a HTPC as suggested if I did.. I usually stare at 40" of 1080p all day long :)

(fact technically I do have a HTPC have my laptop doing that to a 46" TV right now.. laptops however with the 4500mhd chipset however struggle with some 1080p content)

4play posted : Thats why you built a HTPC, you download all the hi-def media you want onto hard drives and save them, watch them anytime anywhere. Rip them from disk to the hard drive, of course try to stick with xvid format. I installed a blu-ray player in my HTPC also, so that if i buy a blu-ray disk then i can play it from there as well. It's great to have a PC on my 52" LCD.

ErikRP posted : If you're such a purist, why put up with DVD-5 when you should be insisting on DVD-9s, or even Blu-Ray?

It's about quality of the source. I'm not going to touch a movie like Star Wars at anything less than DVD-5, and I'd prefer it be DVD-9. On the other hand, the latest romantic comedy, CAM bootleg, or other low-interest movie is fine at 700MB. Even though I have decent speed and caps, why would I want to download a whole DVD if I'm just going to watch and delete.

You're welcome to download whatever turns you on, but don't start claiming DVD-rips are dead, or that there is no place for a 700MB avi files. I think we all have seen formats we think should be trashed (personally, I hate those iPod 300MB movie rips).
