But the point to understand about usenet data collecting at least is.. it all comes back around..

But in my hey day I burned 1000+ divx movies 2001-2004 and then started on DVD's in 2004 least another 300+ and now I don't bother.. still can't find some rare movies I archived like "Heart of Midnight"

Anyway.. I agree don't download DVD unless you have too.. stick to blueray or maybe x264 is safer (sometimes blue ray's just don't play right :() DVD's are only made for a pixel resolution I believes tops of 720x520 unless you running 800x600 on your computer.. that blows as a resolution :) and my computer is my TV I don't bother to separate them in different rooms :) and would employ a HTPC as suggested if I did.. I usually stare at 40" of 1080p all day long :)

It's about quality of the source. I'm not going to touch a movie like Star Wars at anything less than DVD-5, and I'd prefer it be DVD-9. On the other hand, the latest romantic comedy, CAM bootleg, or other low-interest movie is fine at 700MB. Even though I have decent speed and caps, why would I want to download a whole DVD if I'm just going to watch and delete.

You're welcome to download whatever turns you on, but don't start claiming DVD-rips are dead, or that there is no place for a 700MB avi files. but if someone is on 56k or using a 3G data plan (capped at 5Gig download) to download a 700mb (CD size) rip of a movie, they should spend 10-20 dollars more per month and get with the 'high speed/no caps' program.

I try to avoid downloading those and go for straight DVDs, or h.264 720p Blu-Ray rips (which while not as good as the original format, are a decent compromise for the size and file quality).

And the minimum size I make most of my own DVD rips for use on portables, etc., is 900MB, with longer movies being either 1100MB or 1400MB.
