1 edit | Can someone help me to optimize things for my setup?
Maybe someone can help me to optimize things for my setup: I have 2 PC's in 2 separate locations (my house and my parents' house - approx. 5 mi. apart). I want to transfer 3 files (approx. 6GB ea.) from my parents to my house (FWIW It's always in that direction: parents (source), my house (download). Both PC's are running Win XP, and have Verizon FIOS 25/15 How is the best way to do this?
Currently I use Himachi and Free Download Manager to transfer files. However sometimes (like tonight) things run pitifully slow (3Mbps) so that it's not feasible to transfer files. Any idea? |

| FiOS for all we know should NEVER slow down.
»/tweaks And post your results.
The way I transfer files is simply setup Remote Desktop(RDP, port 3389), and allow access to hard drives when you connect.
This way you can use the desktop, and drag the files you need right to your hard drive.
Another way would be to find some FTP server and client. Try my way first and see if it does good for you. |

| reply to cgott42 You have guaranteed 25/15 Mbs to the Internet. Your parents have guaranteed 25/15 Mbs to the Internet. You do not have a guaranteed end to end and dedicated 25/15 Mbs link. If your software runs fine one day and slow the next, it's likely congestion on the VZ routers, ie the Internet. Not much you can do about and I don't see how using a different software product will help the situation. Compression could help. |
