Black screen when switching channels

I have a Scientific Atlanta 4250HD box and connecting via an HDMI cable. WHen I switch channels (from a non HD channel to an HD channel, sometimes the HD channel does not come thru, (and vice versa) when I am on a HD channel and I go back to a NON HD channel, the screen is black. Most of the time the remedy is to turn both the TV and box off for five seconds. I called optimum and they did a box update but still it seems to persist. ANy ideas?
