| Odd Memory Issue
Hello all. this one is odd. Motherboard is Asus P7P55D with i7 860 CPU and 4 - 2GB PC3-12800 DDR3 memory.
Here is where it gets odd:

Notice that I do have a 64 Bit version of Windows installed, and also note that it is reporting the installed memory as 8.00 GB, yet it also says there is only 3.99 GB usable memory.
Here is what Everest 5.30 shows:

I ran Memtest86+ on all 4 DIMMs and no errors were reported. I have already loaded the latest BIOS, and all drivers are up to date, although it cannot be a driver issue as when I boot to the BIOS it shows the amount of memory installed as 4088 MB. I tried every memory setting I could - memory re-map, dram speed, voltage, timings, you name it I did it to no avail.
Has anyone ever seen a problem like this? Tech support is useless.. Asus says it is the memory, and Corsair says it is the motherboard.
What I found with various searches lead to at best a non-answer. Any idea what it could be? |

How about a paging file? If you don't have a paging file, your system could be using the ram |

Have you done any tweaking (eg, no swapfile) that might have affected the handling of memory? |

as you can see, 4087 mb total with 2255 mb free..
said by srr2 :Have you done any tweaking (eg, no swapfile) that might have affected the handling of memory? no "tweaking", my swapfile is set for auto on drive c: and it is currently 4087 mb in size. besides, the o/s must be ruled out, as was posted originally, the system bios sees only 4088 mb total memory - that is the amount displayed during post and the same 4088 mb is listed as total memory in the system info bios page.

| reply to beerbum Obviously it is a problem at the motherboard / memory area. I doubt there's anything you can do in Windows to access the other 4GB if the BIOS isn't recognizing it correctly.
Looks like you aren't the only one with this problem with that memory: »www.tomshardware.com/forum/26466···ehaviour
It seems like you may want to try a different model / brand of memory. |

1 edit | reply to beerbum I doubt that the brand of memory has anything to do with it because it's already being seen as 8GB.
I've seen something similar to this on a .. what was it?.... Asrock, I think, board. There was a mystery option in the BIOS setup. It wasn't explained in the laughable "help" on the BIOS screens, and there was no mention of it at all in the laughable tripe they alleged to be a "user manual". It was called something like "memory remap". I can't remember the name of the setting exactly, but that's close. Well, if that wasn't enabled, the full memory installed in the board was similarly unavailable to the system in the same way you're seeing there. So maybe you want to take a careful look at the "advanced" settings in your BIOS to see if there's a similar mystery setting, and give that a try.
Also, again IIRC, the full memory DID show up in the system properties just like yours does, however a big chunk of it was unavailable to the system like yours is. |

Go into msconfig, boot tab, advanced options. See if maximum memory is checked off. |

I'm going to swap out the memory with a different brans / speed.. might just be incompatible ram. |

said by "anandtech" : One of the most irritating problems we ran across during testing was playing Wheres Waldo with our memory configurations. Our standard P55 test bed is equipped with 8GB of memory. We started noticing weird memory benchmark results in Everest that just did not make sense as Read/Write rates were up 30% lower than our 4GB setup on the same board or other 8GB configurations. These along with applications like Photoshop CS4 x64 and AutoCad 2010 x64 refusing to recognize up to 4GB of memory had us searching for answers.

| reply to beerbum Try toggling the following BIOS option:
Advanced -> North Bridge Chipset Configuration -> Memory Remap Feature
If this is Enabled, try setting it to Disabled. If it's Disabled, try setting it to Enabled. Enabled is the default. -- Making life hard for others since 1977. I speak for myself and not my employer/affiliates of my employer. |

I just switched memory to one listed on the ASUS QVL and the same problem exists. |

| As mentioned in the article, it's caused by the combination of CPU, mobo and RAM so it's not an easy thing to fix. It's not entirely the fault of either of these manufacturers.
What I would try and do is pull the CMOS battery then start fresh. Start with all settings on default/auto but changing the RAM speed to 1066 and start from there. I believe the ASUS board will default the timing of the Corsair RAM to the correct DCT profile. If not, then look at the timing for 1066 and set them manually. |

Looks like 2 updates since the 30th of Sept. (One on friday) |

also I already tried the cmos wipe and manually setting the memory to a lower speed.
for some reason I'll bet ASUS says it's Intel's problem.. |

| reply to beerbum Well, get in contact with Asus. Their motherboard manual *and* web site state the board can work with up to 16GB RAM with a 64-bit OS. You have both.

| I can see this will go nowhere fast..
Dear Valued Customer,
Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service.
My name is Stacey and it's my pleasure to help you with your problem.
In this situation, I suggest you to take the motherboard out of case and keep the necessary components(a CPU, a video card) onboard. Then plug one of your memories into each slot for a test to see if it can be recognized completely. If it is not helpful, please clean the goldfingers of the memory by a rubber and plug again. Please make sure the memory is really plugged into and try more times. If it doesnt work, please reseat the cpu and test again. If it still exists, please erase the cmos to load default settings and try again. I'll go through the motions in a bit, first I have to go to the store and get some rubbers.. should I get lubricated or no? |

| In my experience, the ASUS customer support is totally useless as is their support for resellers. I used have have a tech contact with them through our partner program with ASUS and every single problem I threw at their way were either "we can't reproduce the problem" or "it's not a problem with our product, contact the other guys". Eventually, I got tried of it and just switch ASUS to other brands when there's a problem. No need to waste time and get no results. |

well I'll be damned..

it seems that re-seating the CPU did the trick..

I tried re-seating the CPU 3 times before, I guess the 4th time is the charm.. of course now I need a new pin for my heat sink since one of them broke as those cheap plastic pins are NOT made for repeated use.. |
