Tirael posted : Same here, Gadeon. The only reason that it is said that 50/0/21 is subpar to 51/0/20 is because of the uptime on DRW. If glyphed, once every 1 minute 15 seconds, you do 150% damage. That is considered greater than a dot that ranges from 400-600 damage at full duration. With DRW, you are looking at larger burst damage and over time, more dps.

Also, even if you think those people who are 51/0/20 are good, you could be better. Case and point, I know DKs who push out good dps on Mal'Ganis (w/ DBB and 5k GS) that I wipe the floor with. Having Arch, Kris and Corelon around, you have to be on top of your game in order to beat those scrubs. I think a few of them are giving sexual "healing" to GMs in order to do the dps they do...*cough* Arch..*cough*.
--
“Reality doesn't bite, rather our perception of reality bites.” - Anthony J.
Tirael posted : I did it with a group pulling sub 2.5k dps. If you want to do Less Rabi easy mode here is the strat the requires the least amount of luck (albeit it still requires some). Find a pvp elemental shammy spec'd into reverb(reduces shock CDs by 1 sec). Then, take with you 2-3 classes that can interrupt (we had dk/rogue to interrupt with a lock and a resto druid). Then, pull and blow lust/hero and burn. Have one interrupter grab the first interrupt and then the next one the second, and so on. Here is the most important part. His transform has a 5 second CD. A shammy with reverb has a 5 sec CD on their interrupt (wind shock or earth shock). Once he reaches 50%, the shaman stops dpsing and waits for the next transform. When it happens, he interrupts. Then each time his interrupt comes up, he hits it again. Wash, rinse, repeat until dead. That's easy mode Less Rabi. Even if you don't have a shammy with reverb, as long as you have good dps and 3 interrupters it is easy.
--
“Reality doesn't bite, rather our perception of reality bites.” - Anthony J. I can understand them giving opinions on specs, however, when there are other DKs using the standerd 51/0/20 build, and I was using mine 50/0/21 and out DPSing them, I assume my build worked just fine. I think some people read into forums to much instead of trying things out on their own. However, there are many things on here I find helpful. I am a Trial/Error type guy, so if something breaks I fix it. I haven't tried Uld with the new spec, but on Twins I pumped out 11.6k for that fight. Until I have issues staying alive or holding threat, I will stick with my spec. And though I was a huge fan of Blood for DPS. I was happy with the DPS I put out last night in 25 ToC.
Tirael posted : Swordshattering is not 3.6% more avoidance than SSG. I don't want you to think I am saying "You are wrong, nub", I am saying that maybe you have incorrect information.

SSG is 25 defense skill. 25 Defense skill = 123 Defense Rating. 41 defense rating = 1% avoidance total (dodge/parry/miss). It is exactly the same as the Toughness talent use to be for paladins and warriors.

Swordshattering is s flat 4% parry, not subject to the DR. My point is that since there was a shortage of tanks many players that have class that is able to tank just read a guide and start tanking. This guide and xcals druid tanking guide are both well put togeather guides, I just wish for the sake of PUGGERS everywhere that some one would do a tanking for dummies guide says things like if it has a mana bar it's probably gonna have a ranged attack so pull like this.

jofos posted : I don't tank much any more. I was asked to play my shadow priest more so I took that opportunity since it was easier. Maybe I was asked to play my spriest because I was a bad tank or maybe because our guildleader was our main tank and we had three other really good tanks but no spriest. Either way I'm now just a dps.
With all that said this guide like many other tank guides out there are very helpful with spec and gear selection. With the relative easy of getting gear and duel specs (you can have 2 tanking specs and try them out to see which works best) I see a lot more players trying to tank. They are geared and specced properly but they seem to lack an understanding of whta they are suppose to be doing. In heroic toc last night for example we get a hunter, warrior and rogue. First try tank pulls the warrior, rogue poisons tank, hunter shoots healer, and everyone kisses the floor. On to the second try: tank pulls rogue, warrior and hunter attack healer, healer yells WTF!!!, everyone kisses floor. Tank leaves healer gets guildy to tank: Next try with supposively uber tank. Tank pulls hunter, rogue poisons tank, warrior kills healer and I run to the door but kiss floor just before I leave the instance.
This is what I'm seeing more and more from tanks. Keep in mind that both tanks were geared, both had nice HP (first tank , a warrior, had 45k hp, the second tank, a pally, had 36k hp) and they both were specced out just as what ever site or guide had told them to be. But they had never found a guide that told them how get and keep aggro on a group made of both melee and and ranged.
My suggestion for anyone doing a guide would be to say, you need X armor X hp X avoidance to start tanking heroics. And say for best threat generation in this encounter do this, or when dealing with this type of mobs try this. I'm sure that most people here have watched videos on tank spot about how to do what ever boss in what ever raid you were planning to do next, somewhere in between the Ulduar videos and the the ToGC videos there's a warrior pulling video. That is the kind of stuff that I think most people need for learning to tank.

by the way I do think this is a very good guide.

I've seen too many new tanks that get locked in on one mob, or group of mobs and never notice the add that is beating the shit out of their healer. It takes practice and time to acquire that type of awareness, but good tanks work at it constantly.
--
"Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom; it is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves." I know it isn't much but it is still 80 more armor. Also, one key thing that people don't think about is that more armor increases your threat because of AttT (if you have it). (880/108)*3=24.4 attack power. I agree with Gem, the sticking point of that ring is the high stamina, not the armor.

Armor does not suffer from a DR in the way you think it does. There is a point at which it "caps" which is enforced by the code of the game but not the formula for which it is figured. As you get closer to this cap, the more armor you add the less % yield you receive in reduction. As Quatra said, it still gives you the same TTL as the % it adds but it doesn't give you that same % in reduction. It's empirical vs mathematical. You cannot say that 880 armor is X% reduction because you have to add the armor to your current to get the correct % for you. What you can say is that 880 armor gives X% more EH, which is why EH exists. EH is the empircal, % reduction is the matematical. Let's use Gemsnakes armor in this calculation:

26,800 armor = 63.75% physical damage reduction

Formula for Armor to % Reduction

Reduction = Armor/(Armor + B)*100
B = (467.5 * Enemy Level - 22167.5)

For a level 83 this simplifies to:

Reduction = Armor/(Armor+16435)*100

Let's plug in some numbers. This is where you get the mathmatical.

Reduction = 26,800 (26,800 + 16,435) *100
Reduction = 61.98% (this shows post DR armor reduction)

Now add the 880 total you would get from the Ony ring

Reduction = 27,680 (27,680 + 16,435) * 100
Reduction = 62.74%

61.98 - 62.74 = 0.76% increase in reduction

Here is where you get the empirical

Pre Ony ring (Assuming a hit for 10k)

10,000 * 0.6198 = 6198 damage reduction
10,000 - 6198 = 3802 Damage taken

Post Ony Ring

10,000 * 0.6294 = 6294 reduction
10,000 - 6294 = 3706 damage taken

That's 100 less damage taken by adding just 0.74% reduction which scales as the hits get bigger, EH.
--
“Reality doesn't bite, rather our perception of reality bites.” - Anthony J.
