| Windows Defender 'not turned on' icon
Ever since I installed the new AVG Free 9 this morning, I am seeing the icon in my systray stating that my WD isn't turned on ! I've checked, turned it on again in the software 3x already and this is driving me bonkers. It was working perfectly BEFORE installing the new AVG Free 9. I need help please. -- Lonnie |

2 edits | When you have two real time protection apps running at the same time, results may be unpredictable. Although it's not supposed to conflict, here's how I'd test;
Try uninstalling Windows Defender and reinstalling it. If that doesn't work uninstall AVG and WD. Then install WD and test. If it works, install AVG9 again and retest. If it then fails, it's very possible AVG detects and blocks WD.
Personally, I'd use Microsoft Security Essentials instead of WD. You don't need to uninstall WD first, but I did since the WD would be overlaid anyway and I preferred a clean install to the overlay install. -- The greatest dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal, well-meaning but without understanding. -- Justice Louis D. "During the installation of AVG 9.0 products, the Microsoft Windows Defender application will be automatically turned off.
Windows Defender is not removed from the computer, only disabled for the time AVG is installed.
Please note that this is important to prevent conflicts between AVG and Windows Defender. As they are both security applications, they will try to check files you are working with. Since they will do that at the same time, conflicts may arise. These can cause freezing, crashes or slowdown of computer. It is generally not recommend to use more than one security product on one computer." -- Microsoft® Security MVP, 2004 - 2009 DP's Security Bits |

| reply to LadyL ladyL, looking at the AVG article, it looks like the AVG installer disables WD, when AVG is installing.. that is a good thing because the WD program could interfere with the install..
you should be able to just re-enable the WD program, after AVG has finished installing.. |
