| cable monopoly breakup comcast should be broken up into bits as they have customers in all three time zones already.. (coast to coast). at&t still flies under the radar until they actually build their network of uverse.. then they are just as guilty of being too big of a monopoly. if the federal government is too stupid to see the handwriting on the wall with what these companies are doing, then it will be up to each state public utility commissions to assert jurisdiction over how these companies provide service in coordination with state attorney's generals!
this is in part why lots of incumbents LOST their jobs this election season. welcome to the unemployment line schmucks! |

 | If your break up one, you must break them all up, ATT, VZ, and all the rest.
You would have to spin ATTW and VZW off as well as their entire networks would get it. Including the backbone. |

1 edit | reply to tmc8080 And even if you break them up, the same people will own all the spun off companies.
And all a breakup up does is create a whole bunch of new executives and central office bureaucracies making huge salaries to run all the new companies. It is very inefficient and would actually raise prices to the customers and NOT lower them. And it wouldn't even create more competition because the spun off companies would still dominate the physical locations they were assigned in the breakup.
And if you try to do a breakup of the vertical integration(ie advertising; content creation; content delivery; infrastructure), all you do is move the costs around to the separate parts, but the end result will still be a larger overall bill. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page

And how would they compete against each other when the infrastructure in each company would be in a different geographic location. Your idea assumes overbuilding, which will never happen due to the costs involved to startup in new areas. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page

2 edits | reply to tmc8080 I think Comcast should get bigger possibly merge with Cablevision, and compete directly against Verizon. The bigger Comcast becomes the greater effect it has on the Telcos. I like the idea of mulitpal providers. But if you read this board one day, you will see Wimax from Sprint is becoming comparable to DSL, and cable. So no need for breakup, if anything Comcast should be getting USF slush fund money, because it provides phone service. -- They Live... We Sleep...
Spreading the wealth around never results in a better outcome for people. It always results in destruction.

| Then ATT needs it more than Comcast. After all ATT Owns both Ameritech, PacBell, SW Bell and now Bell South besides the 2nd largest cell phone company without any problems. They're also one of the largest backbone providers in the World. They own a CLEC company - ATT Local and also resell DSL as ATT DSL with Covad. They purchased parts and bits of the former North Point with VZ an all the other DSL companies that went belly up.
So why don't we split them up AGAIN first?? They let themselves get so big so break them up.
But then again what happens when the new company goes bankrupt? What do we do? We let the "sister company" buy up that area and come back again. History repeats and repeats and repeats. |

| reply to DaveDude The Telco's will wake up and see Sprint as a threat especially when they start bringing more cities online and bring out a 4G phone for voice. With them being the first ever national 4G provider they'll have a greater return and faster as people will start to switch. Especially when VZ and ATT spend their money bitching and pissing over TV ads when Sprint should be running ads that say "Does VZW or ATT offer YOU 4G coverage"? and then show the Sprint logo. |
