Why is it that Comcast gets termed

"utterly massive"...

when they're still only half the size of Verizon...

and 1/4 the size of AT&T?

(as ranked by market capitalization)

AT&T= 151 Billion
Verizon= 82.8 Billion
Comcast= (even after these utterly massive gains this quarter..
41.2 Billion

Agreed those two are large, but doesn't market cap include debt?

I think the term massive can also be based on number of customers and on the asset's value.

Market cap is just based on stockholder estimate of the companies value and future income generating potential.

Comcast is lower valued based on the fact that there ROI is quite poor and their return on stockholders equity is low. Why is that? My take is: that is due to a poorly run and overpaid mgt team with huge amounts of waste and inefficiency.

..poorly run?

Those #'s they reported sure don't look like a poorly run company to me.

And..as far as your discounting the market cap as "just stockholders estimate of a companies value"...

Isn't that a bit like saying a home valued at 250,000 is ''just a buyers estimate of a homes value versus one valued at 4 times that at 1 million?" But yet..the 1/4 million dollar house being referred to as "simply getting to huge" is appropriate when compared to others in this industry?

Sorry..but IMHO..it just makes no sense and seems more a function of the supporters of the companies that are NOT PRODUCING the numbers simply trying to stiffle the growth of the one(s) that are by trying to bring up these ridiculous points
about the company getting "too huge". It's their own behemoths that need the work.

How about laying fault where fault is due instead and attribute it to a company who IS executing on a very sound business plan
versus the ones who are either very late to the party in upgrading their plants..or who are simply trying to milk their old one for everything it's worth.

And..for some more comparison..
Last 12 months revenues from each..

Verizon..105.3 Billion
AT&T...123.2 Billion
Comcast..35 Billion
(source..yahoo Finance...stock symbols "T".."VZ" and "CMCSA"

Who's massive??

The numbers are good but ""massive"" They lost 132,000 video customers. They added 361,000 HSI this quarter but only 65,000 last quarter that's and avg. of 213,000 per quarter ,good but no big deal. the voip number is great but we all know some day voice will go "POOF" AKA Femtocell.

IMHO..losing 132k Video customers is NOTHING compared to the massive efforts of both verizon and AT&T to move into the video business. And, consider what is happening in reverse..with Comcast gaining 375k new VOICE customers. And, you have to also consider the huge new # of digital customers they've added..indicating that comcast is very successfully upgrading their own basic customers into digital triple play packages..and getting their phone business in the process.

And ..as far as your chsi statistic..using the 65k # for last quarter really creates a somewhat distorted picture because comcast already said they diverted those marketing dolllars elsewhere for their digital rollout last quarter I believe.
Even at that..gaining 200k customers every 3 months in something as mature as hsi is right now is a lot in itself.
I think one also now has to ask..what comes next?
With the docsis 3.0 rollout hitting full stride..i think the DSL customer base of the telcos is even more at risk.
And, hasn't verizon cut back their fios rollout plans to focus more on areas they're already in?

I've said for 2 years now on this site that the two big problems each of them face is first..AT&T insisting on using their existing last mile network..and Verizon spending so much money on such a labor intensive thing as fiber to the home.
Fios is a great technology but it's going to take a LONG time to be a real competitive threat. And..is uverse good enough to compete against the D3 threat?

I think the BIG problems for the telcos have yet to really materialize. They're losing huge #'s of landlines..and next will be dsl customers.

We'll see.

You don't think FiOS is a real

competitive threat?
