Bandwidth costs have been cratering for years. Combined with the fact that backbone operators have been A) consolidating and B) are also the end user ISPs, the amount of traffic that actually leaves a network has also declined. Add in peering and BGP and the bandwidth costs to most ISPs are negligible.

The whole bandwidth hog brouhaha is a made-up myth...so that ISPs, who are also content owners in many cases, can protect their content businesses. It's all about protecting profits...with no basis in reality.

Can you get RCN?

Or would you like a grant to build your own ISP?

Oh wait, that would be too much work.

I can't get RCN. And, no, I don't want a grant. What I do want is a level playing field. If capitalism is as grand as you say, companies should be falling over each other as they rush to build networks. They aren't. And the reason they aren't is because the game is rigged.

·Comcast

The game isn't rigged so much as the cost of building a wireline network that can compete with Comcast is great. People apparently have better ways to spend their money, and/or nobody has the balls to try building a network when politicians have enough power to be lobbied into stopping it.

The game isn't rigged. It just costs a lot of money to get in the game. And the payoff is too low to make it worth the risk. And the players that are big now got that way because they got in to the game when it was brand new 50 yrs ago when cable systems were starting up. And they spent 50 yrs of investing to get the way they are now.

Want to get in the game? Then get in the NEW game - wireless delivery of broadband. You can start small and grow over the years - just like the cable companies did.

Wireless still has to be backhauled, aggregated and interconnected with the backbone....and all that happens over a wireline network. Guess who owns the wireline network?

Here are the major backbone providers that backhaul internet access:

None of them are Comcast.

I think to a certain extent the game has been rigged. Just look at how many times muni efforts to put in fiber have been blocked(or attempted to block) by the big ISPs taking them to court. In some the this instances the ISPs were not(and were not planning to ) serve the area.

There is a HUGE barrier of entry to this market. This is far, FAR from a free market. Entrenched incumbents are at a *huge* advantage.
