 [Wired] Linksys RV016 - making it pingable

Try as I might, I have not been able to make my RV016 pingable from the internet. I have joined the DSLReports Line Monitors groups for OOL and FIOS, but the monitors are not able to ping my router.

I have added an Access Rule to the router firewall to Allow Ping[0] on all interfaces from Any source to Any destination Anytime with Priority 1. This did not fix it.

I set Block WAN Request to Disable. This did not fix it (I changed it back to enable out of caution)

I've done a web search for solutions to no avail.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Phil,

I tried disabling Statefull Packet Inspection - no go
I also disabled DoS - still no go (back on now)

I even turned off the fierwall - still cannot ping either of my WAN IP addresses

Any other thoughts

What does your network consist of (e.g., modem->router->clients)? Is your modem a modem or is it modem/router combo? Are you in fact trying to ping your WAN IP address (»www.ipchicken.com will give that to you)?

My network consists of
Broadband from OOL - SURFboard cable modem
Broadband from Verizon FIOS - Verizon ONT
Router = Linksys RV016 multi WAN 16 port router

Yes I am trying to ping my WAN IP addresses:

OOL 69.113.70.75
Name Address: ool-4571464b.dyn.optonline.net
Remote Port: 1577

FIOS 71.190.157.227
Name Address: pool-71-190-157-227.nycmny.fios.verizon.net
Remote Port: 1459

Client side - multiple switches, Wireless access point, WinXP, Vista, Linux, DTV set top boxes, game consoles...

I know that there are some differences between the RV016 and the RV082, but all I have to do is set Block WAN Request to Disable to be pingable on both WAN interfaces of my RV082.




Unless there is a major firmware problem with the RV016, your problem is likely to be found in the modem and ONT settings. To test if there is actually a problem with pinging the WAN interfaces on the RV016, you could setup one WAN port for static IP, and setup a PC for the same subnet and connect it to that WAN interface. If that WAN port is pingable from the PC, then your current problem is with your modem/ONT/ISP.

FIXED!

Thanks to Phil and Netfixer for the help and suggestions.

I tracked down the cause of my distress - a defect in the liveware here.

Apparently at some point a port forwarding rule was placed in the router that should not have been there. I killed the bogus rule and, like magic, everything is working as it should.

Hopefully this will be of help to someone in the future who is as dense as me.
