Reality is, we need to start to figure out how to run public transit in three ways:
- For profit and the public be damned
- For the public and the cost be damned
- For the public, with the rate payer in mind.

The reality is, Government just sucks at looking after money. Its everywhere really. If Government was run like a business it would _hopefully_ be run better. But we have seen plenty of private sector locations run like crap.

What is the solution? Count your loonies and stop giving away the TTC tokens as dimes by mistake (done that to many times to count)

The good news is: The Electronic system will be in. We are going to pay for that... and that will auto-debit your account for you! No more worrying about a pay increase... they can do it on the fly then! Want to get to work between 7am and 10am? That's peak travel time... extra $1 convenience charge. No more transfers, just a 25 cent "card scanning" fee :)

You're surprised? Now that the cat is out of the bag they have no choice, otherwise people would be buying and hoarding tokens leaving no tokens available for sale (AFAIK the TTC doesn't just produce tokens on a whim, so there is a set number out there)

yea...parking in downtown London is about $120/month...the problem is, there isn't any spots...when my wife was transferred to downtown she couldn't find anywhere to park...the closest she could find was a lot about 4 blocks away and was about $75...now, four blocks isn't a big deal, unless it is pouring rain out and a blizzard outside...so instead, we adjusted our schedules so i can drop her off every morning at the front door, and pick her up after work. :)

Depends - if someone can live off of transit alone - it would be cheaper. Regardless, wear and tear on a car, especially city driving, means you'll need a new(er) car quicker - if you don't use public transit. Insurance offers discounts if you don't drive to work. (which is always why they ask, 'How many KM one way to work')

Place like Kitchener are useless for transit unless your work and home are on mainline - but Toronto has a good system.

I want to add(even though this not a political forum) , this part in parcel the Common Sense Revolution hard at work. Before Mike Harris the provincial government paid 50% of the operating costs and 75% of the capital cost.

Hey TTC want to save money? Close Mel's subway to nowhere,and don't build the white elephant that's going up to Vaughn.

Even better question, why is when I leave Toronto proper I have to pay an extra fare, even if I don't use the transit in the burbs, but not the other way around. If you come into Toronto from the burbs, if you don't use the TTC, you don't pay that extra fare, maybe we can get some cash there?

The fact they are moving towards hiking fares should be a shock, as rider ship increses costs increase(to hire more idle hands), as ridership falls, costs increases (to keep idle hands busy).

This is the same TTC that bought wheelchair accessible buses(not an issue) but actually holds less people then a conventional bus, so they have to buy more to move the same people.

The biggest problem with the TTC is they are overstaffed and have people well past their prime working.

There is an older gentleman working the booth at my local station. he's got to be pushing 80(mid 70's at the very least). on September 30th I walked in with $120 cash (why do we need to pay cash.. what happened to automated dispensers that take credit/debit?) This was for 5 tokens and a metropass (exact change).

First it took 5 minutes to figure out I had 6 20's, then he needed a calculator to figure out what I owed him!

Then we have the guy standing there (if he's not chit chatting with the old guy) making sure we have transfers,pay a fare or have a metropass!

Apparently they are losing $2m on the "transferable" metropass. Who's brilliant idea was that? One of the folks I work with has a nanny, she comes to work with the Metropass, then gives it to my co-worker to come to work with. Bingo $100 gone.. how many more time is this scenario repeated across Toronto.

How about telling the union they are going to accept a 5% pay cut..
