Download and run the Windows Upgrade Advisor from Microsoft. But the 64-bit CPUs (atleast in the case of Intel and AMD) are ALL capable of handling 32-bit instructions. They are just also capable of handling 64-bit instructions.

With a 32-bit version of Windows, your software won't know or care that the CPU is 64-bit. Everything that runs on your current computer will run on the new one. In looking further into the specifications for that laptop, there is this:
Certain device drivers and/or applications may not be compatible with a 64-bit CPU and therefore may not function properly.

So, it seems that I can't know ahead of time if my Photoshop 7, for example, will run. Or, some old utilities from Win95 days but still work fine on my old WinXP 32-bit laptop with 32-bit Celeron CPU.

I'm not clear on this: I assumed that 32 bit programs would not run on a 64 bit system.
