4.7" is a good compromise for such a device. If you want a tiny cell phone, a smartphone is probably not what you should be looking at. Think of what else you don't have to carry around with this in your pocket...
I have a Palm Pre & it works very well as a fully functional smartphone. And the size is good for me with having it in a pocket all day.
