| Ever hear of a roaming Wildblue service rep???
I just got a call from someone who claimed to be a roaming Wildblue service representative (here in the San Diego area). He said that he had noted that I had a low signal strength and would be able to come to the house tomorrow to re-aim my dish for free. I have had some connection problems, so I gave him the OK to come out, but now I'm having second thoughts that this might be some kind of scam.
Has anyone ever heard of this kind of service from Wildblue? If it's on the up-and-up, I'd say that this is outstanding! |

1 edit | Call WildBlue support and ask. If the support worker does not know, ask for the supposed supervisor.
And when you call support, ask for your alignment numbers. Then you know for sure.
Scammers do pull this type of thing in 'various industries' to gain access to homes. And then distract the homeowner as the assistant collects objects. Call display on the phone is great for initially checking people out, unless they are falsifying the number.

1 edit | reply to Reddog99 No way is Wild Blue going to pay him so he is going to have to get money out of you someway. He may in fact be a wild blue installer and have access to modem parameters. But I would guess he needs some money and is looking for ways to make a few bucks. That is not say that your system may not really need a repoint and he may in fact make yours better.
I would like to see you ask this question on the official Wild Blue site and see what kind of answer you get.

| reply to Reddog99 There are field reps, some that travel between/among dealer installers, some inspecting (QC) installations, some tending canary sites. It's not impossible for this guy to be legit.
But ask yourself this; did you actually suspect signal strength as a possible cause of your problem? If not, he might be a scammer - and just threw out a very common satellite issue just in case he might have guessed lucky. In any case, demand at least two picture IDs - preferably one of the from Wildblue - before letting him even open his toolbox.

| reply to Reddog99 We employ a team of Field Service Technicians around the country who conduct trouble audits and proactively call on some accounts where we detect a weak signal. One of them does serve the Southern California area. Based on what you described, this sounds like it's one of our techs. It is an attempt to fix any problems for a customer who might have a weak signal, and yes, that visit from one of our techs would be free of charge. |

| reply to Reddog99 Good advice from all and thanks. I called WB and verified that the service call was ligitimate. And yes, the tech did come out today & re-align my dish for no charge. He found some loose bolts and a bad ground. My connection is noticeably faster now.
All in all, I couldn't be happier with the service.

| reply to Reddog99 I had a field engineer come to my house when they saw low readings from my modem. He wrote up a list of things that were wrong with my installation and then left. He said WB would contact me to get someone out there to fix the issues. No one called, no one came out. I called the number on the sheet he gave me but that number didn't work. After getting the run around, I gave up on it. -- RIP my babies Buttons 1/15/94-2/9/07, Beamer 7/24/08, & Bows 12/17/94-10/11/09 |
