Sprint Help

Ok i have Verizon UM175 with parabolic Grid Antenna, my current tower is like 3-4 miles away. I've been either getting close or even going alittle over my 5gb everymonth and i checked into Sprint (unlimited) and i looked at the coverage for my house, look at the map and my house is where the black square is i drew, any chance of me getting sprint with my grid antenna? or would the speed i would get just not be worth it? Thank you in advance.

I dont think you'd be too happy with the Sprint device looking at that map. you're in the same color code I am with Sprint, and they told me they would not send me a Sprint device.

I thought you finally got your UM175 to working good.....

No idea how far Jim or Jack live from you, but perhaps you could PM them and see if either would be able to make a trip to your place with their equipment to see if something could be set up for you.

If you find out you CAN get decent reception and speeds, then you can probably do the BYOD plan from Millenicom for the Sprint service.

I think it would be around 7-10 miles to the nearest sprint tower, i know others have gone like 8 miles to reach a tower, jim i know has a far reach with his tower, if your reading this your feedback would be great , I'm just wondering if i get my antenna perfected and maybe even buy an amp and such what speeds would i be seeing? and would it be worth it? im not very experienced in "Max Distance" and where the limit is where its just not worth it, but it would fix alot of my worries and maybe even the future issue of me getting canceled :/. Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you!

I had to do a re-point the other day, Jim helped me out on that one via email. I think I'm pointing at a tower 11 miles away, I haven't gone to check it yet but according to the Sprint coverage maps it is at a distance of 11 miles. My numbers were good with just the grid antenna but when I hooked the Cyfre up they look even better! RX = -58dbm.

sorry for the late reply my os went corrupt and oh what a hassle that is but anyways. im sorry for not mentioning this earlier but i dont just want sprint for the security i would also like to be able to do more things that i cant currently do that are bandwidth heavy like playing fps online games and youtube which kills me to watch with a 5gig cap. i play online games fine now no problem except it hogs around 120mb an hour of data :/ sorry for the rambling. but all in all if sprint is actually an option to me i would like to find out more if thats not to much to ask? Thank you.

Millenicom BYOD unlimited plan on Sprint. The best value you can buy for 3G wireless - period. Get a modem from Sprint and try it out with their 30 day trial. If it works, send it back to Sprint and sign up with Millenicom.

Sierra Wireless 598U, and thats probably what Sprint will send you. The coverage maps are not written in stone. You may get a decent signal with the right gear.

Do like Jim say. Him know good.

Seriously, the 598 is an excellent device. Something to consider during your evaluation period is: get a 10' USB extension cable (not a data cable) and with this you can move the 598 around, near windows, etc, to see what sort of sig you can achieve. If you can get into the 90's it should work, and a grid will boost you to the 70's and that's plenty of sig.

does the sprint 598U have the same antenna adapter port type as the Verizon UM175? or would i need a different pigtail?

Just a note on the Sierra external antenna port; it's not a particularly well-engineered connection.

I found I had to spread the slotted tabs on the pigtail's male pin a bit to get it to seat firmly. This is a delicate operation...you want to use a magnifying glass and jeweler's screwdriver and be very careful not to pry the tabs to far out or it won't plug into the Sierra and you just might wind up bending one of these tabs too far back. Just a wee bit of movement. And whatever you do, don't force it. Camera assembly pressure, if you get my meaning here.

Make sure there is practically no weight on this connection; anchor your pigtail and coax somewhere so there's minimum weight on the antenna port connection or it will pull out easily. Piss poor design, in my view.
