1 edit | I want a new camera!
I have a nice "point and shoot" Canon camera, it takes good pictures in my mind, but I would like to extend this more.
I don't want a fancy 1000 dollar camera, but I would like once I can choose a lens (wide, and or good zooming) but takes good clear pictures also. I am not a heavy or fancy picture taker, but I hope if I have something to use, I will get better.
Ideas welcome! |

To get a new camera that you can change lenses you are going to have to go DSLR. This will put you at around $500-$600 for just the body. Lenses start at $100 and top out at about $2000 for a nice zoom. Of course you can get large professional telephoto lenses for $15k, but that is not what we are talking about here.
A decent package will put you near $1k for everything, new. By eveyrthing I mean a body, lens, flash, case, etc. All the things considered mandatory for a decent outfit. You can actually get a nice Nikon D40 brand new with a decent starter lens for under $500. This is a great beginner DSLR. See this page: »www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40.htm
You may want to consider getting something used from someone who maybe just upgraded bodies. You can find deals in many places such as Craigslist. Be very wary of Ebay, but you can get lucky there as well. |

| reply to Dominokat If a dSLR is what is desired, check out the Pentax K-x or K2000 then, could get the hook up for around same cost as the D40 but get much much much more camera for your $$$$$. -- Images are Copyrighted and use is NOT permitted. |

Absolutely if no film N or C glass investment Pentax DSLR is a very good place to start out in that realm.
And still some old bargain glass out there... and unlike C & N DSLR's work with virtually any lens ever made for Pentax since the late 1940's (obviosly not as automated but internal IS any lense will be stabelized, vs just newest.pricey and over and over again repurchased with each lens like C & N since the IS is in cam body) Some argument as if as good in lens IS but for the any lens ever factor really a no brainer. And its still a purist absolute (at majpr cost and only new limitations) argument not really a majorly demonstratible one.
And you can find it (not that new glass is bad) some o the old glass is real nice too, but some ways as nice or argulably better when specific lenses. -- »haywardm.com (Hayward's Key West)

| reply to Dominokat Dominokat,
Might want to check out Costco...I just picked up a Canon Rebel T1i/500d kit...the body, an 18-55 and a 55-250 lenses (both Canons), a 4 gig card and a bag that I could probably pack into for a weekend... all told was about $800...both lenses have image stabilization (a huge plus for "me of slight tremor hands"). I've also made the jump from P&S to this, and am really enjoying it...nice crisp shots, easy to use, all sorts of range from totally manual to totally automatic...the digital video is a plus, even though I don't plan on using it too much, it's still nice to have...
I'm not really partial to a brand-all have their pros and cons...but one thing we do try to do is stick to "photography/camera" brands rather than "electronics" companies.
Also, if no Costco nearby...check best buy-I think they had the same kit for around the same price...we went with Costco because that's where we were...did some "price shopping" via iphone and the prices were about the same in several locations... -- ~~~RCL Liberty of the Seas-Nov 2008~~~

2 edits | reply to robar said by robar :i've got a fuji s7000 if interested.. great price Its a Quasi P&S DSLR but NOT....Fixed lens but SLR setting capable (though smaller than SLR sensor)
And actually many much small like the Canon SX-100 do much better.
Though for any interested I also have a Fuji s-7000 that was involved in a bicycle crash..... still completely functional bit only the mode its in (P) the mode wheel got broken off. (though might have gotten knocked into another mode... I forget been some time since I even looked at it.... lens is fine)
I'd give it away for shipping cost. -- »haywardm.com (Hayward's Key West)
