Also you can configure it as a bridge/switch instead of a router.
--
CCNA, Comtrain Certified Tower Climber

[Equipment] POE powered managed switches?

sporkme posted : This is not for a WISP, but an ISP that needs to drop some cheap switches in a stairwell for building internet access. But you guys know your POE... :)

I'd found a POE-powered switch (ie: the switch itself is powered by POE, it does not provide POE to connected devices) from Linksys a year or two ago, but Cisco seems to have really trimmed down the Linky products and it no longer exists.

I've found a few passable 8 port switches that are fully managed and support VLANs and some type of rate-limiting (two features I need). However, they are not technically POE-powered switches. Power consumption on these seems to run from 10W to 15W. I'll have them from 100' to 300' from the power source. Is a homemade POE injector an option at those distances with that amount of wattage required?

Also, if anyone has recommendations outside of the usual suspects (Linksys, Netgear, SMC, D-Link) on an 8 port switch that has VLANs and rate-limiting, I'd love to hear it...

Thanks!
--
with every mistake we must surely be learning
