If Verizon had an easy, relatively cheap, option for doing FIOS type speeds over copper DSL you can bet they'd be doing it. That's what cable has with DOCSIS 3. It may not scale as far but the question is does it have to? What type of demand is there for 100Mbit+ residential Internet even in the next 5 years? I don't think much at all. 30-50Mbit/sec is going to be sufficient for multiple HD IP video streams and that's the real driving demand for bandwidth these days. As usual the best technology at any given time doesn't automatically win. The winner is the technology that is most practical and you can get into people's hands the quickest. In the short term I think that's going to be DOCSIS 3. |
