I don't think there's a way to turn it off. I'm a late night person and have complained to them (Cablevision) about it. On my system it's programed to go into sleep mode at 1:10 AM.
It's not fair because I turn my box off along with the TV when I'm not watching it.

How on earth do you deal with the FREAKIN volume changes that CV and/or the broadcasting channel (or BOTH) do when commercials come on? I try like hell to watch The Science Channel after my wife falls asleep and either the volume is fine with watching the show and then when the commercial hits and the volume goes WAY up... (enough to wake her anyway - and thats all the counts) or the volume is adjusted fine for commercials and then there's no point it trying to watch the program since you can't hear what 1/2 of the people are saying. |

I complained about both of these issues (volume fluctuation and box-sleeping during early morning hour viewing), and its good to hear I've got company sharing the same gripes.
IIRC the FCC has rules, or the broadcasters agreed to rules, that limit the audio level fluctuations from programming to commercials. It seems to me that since the advent of commercials that are inserted by cable and other providers those regulations/guidelines have been absolutely ignored. Its a shame, because it can be extremely annoying.
The cable box's settings should allow an option that determines the default time frame for sleep, and should not even attempt sleep if you've changed channels or played the DVR recently (at least an hour's time frame). If you're a late night TV watcher the hassle of the sleep timer is very real and very annoying. For those of us that watch during those hours we should be able to set the box to attempt sleep during the hours when WE don't watch TV, not when OTHERS don't watch TV, and we shouldn't be nagged to press buttons while we watch. |

There are wireless devices for the hard of hearing that are IR transmitting that allow you to not disturb your partner.

I Don't know about the DVR boxes (don't have one), but I found that setting the Audio: Range to "Narrow" in my SA4250HD's General Setup menu helps...

My transmitter for the headphones are low by the foot of the bed, so infrared headphones lose connectivity if my knees are up, so look for RF headphones that are rechargeable because changing batteries suck. |

I feel your pain. If anything, I wish the volume went down during commercials so that when the show restarted we would know when to pay attention again. The only easy workaround is if your TV has volume level limit control like Magnavox always advertised and some other TVs have. Check the audio section of the setup menu on your TV to see if it has this feature. |

| Channel 7 is by far the worst when it comes to loud commercials. Watching the news, the audio output is low so you turn the volume up... then when they go to break, the commercials are very loud.
But then again, I guess when they fired everyone earlier this year and replaced them with a computer, it was bound to happen that issues would start appearing. |
