How did you change the CID from Ribbit Mobile number to your regular cell number? Did you have to configure as Ribbit wants to forward all calls from your cell phone to the Ribbit Mobile number to have your regular cell number as CID for outgoing calls?

Thanks. I work in IT, but my first job was with Taco Bell (I hate to say how long ago that was). Anyway, I asked for another invite this morning, and got invited about an hour ago, so you can save yours for someone else. I set up the account and got a local 818 number with it, and quickly linked my cellphone voicemail to the service, then immediately undid the forwarding, as it's not my intention to replace my cellphone voicemail with Ribbit at this time. I've quickly played with the web interface, making and receiving calls from it. It seems cool, but I'll need to try it out more this weekend. I see it's free right now, but from the looks of things it looks like they'll start to charge for everything but the basic services sometime this Spring once they're out of beta. If there ends up being a charge, I'll cancel at that point.

Neither Adobe Flash Player 10.0.22.87 nor 10.0.42.34 which is the current version will be able to log in. It hangs during initializing at about 85% of progress bar than nothing further.

This is true for both Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.

Previously, I had u4801230000 on my Asterisk (not registered) and u4801230001 on my WRTP54G (registered and worked fine on myWRTP54G in the sense I could place free outbound calls, but inbound calls ring and no audio). Now, I swapped both lines, i.e. u4801230000 on my WRTP54G (registered) and u4801230001 on my Asterisk (partially registered as shown above). I still haven't tested the calls yet. My GV has a problem to forward incoming calls to my G5 account at the moment.

As with me, the incoming call is partially working in the sense that the connection gets established, i.e. phone rings; however, there is no audio and the call lasts about 30 seconds before it gets terminated with busy signals. If you look at the snapshot (shown below), you will notice the RTP port did get mapped and correctly established, yet no audio. :(

ribbit via SIP is working perfectly for me for inbound and outbound with x-lite and with sipdroid(on a g1). i have not been able to get it to work properly with my assortment of ATAs and SIP hard phones. but on the other hand i have not put much time at all into it.

the number certainly are limited geographically but you can get as many as want/need(for temporary use, etc.) and the outbound SIP for me is a really great thing. also you can set the caller ID to any number you have linked to your account. mine is set to one of my GV numbers.

yeah I would say getting a couple million users without even "trying" is pretty good. imagine when they actually "try".

most likely your cell provider will charge airtime for the call forwarding. but check with your carrier to be sure.

the ribbit beta accounts are free now will be $30.00 month after beta. the free 'out of beta service' seems to be strictly a voicemail thing. for now you can get free ribbit numbers, it seems like you can get as many as you want. you can call out for free from a flash phone in your web browser or any SIP device. you can set your caller ID to one of your ribbit numbers or any connected number such as your cell phone.

i am currently out of invites but will if i can get one back from someone i invited and help out some of you who want accounts. everyone gets to invite 10 others.

i am not going out of my way to hide my tracks. its just that i believe in a style of communications where a bunch of people share information in an informal/non personal manor. when i started out on AE lines, RCP/M and other BBS's in the early/mid 80's everyone used handles and no one know much about the actual identity of the other forum members. i guess i kind of mis those days a bit. but what i really dislike is the modern social networks like facebook that revolve around personal relationships predominantly. it is not that i dislike those relationships but i believe in keeping them exactly that. IN PERSON RELATIONSHIP's. i do not need computers for that sort of thing. this has pretty much put me in favor of not formally registering on forums or blog comments if not required. i just like it the more casual way of non registered contribution.

i might be a bit old fashioned. but with all the data mining and social networking focused on relationships I really like an somewhat anonymous internet that has a focus more on sharing information than personalities. this thinking leads me to never register on forums, blogs, etc unless there is no other way to post.

they do appear to allow incoming SIP connections. if your girlfriends cell is set up as one of the device in ribbit than yes you can make outbound calls from a SIP device with that number as caller ID. you can also get a new 'ribbit number' and answer calls to that number on your SIP device free or answer on any phone, gtalk, msn, or skype.

Perrhaps you have missed my other authoritative posts in other threads on the topic of why GV is and will continue to be free. It's to associate Google with phone calls, especially timely in light of tomorrow's release of Verizon Wireless Android OS system phone, the Droid. It's my belief (though I did say above "authoritative") that Google's strategy is to create a natural and positive goodwill association with their brand and using a phone. Watch for GoogleVoice being "enabled" or somesuch on Android OS handsets. They are pushing the phones, by giving away the calls (the reverse of giving away the razor and charging for the blades). Google's jackpot will be royalties on the sales of the Android handsets, royalties on the sales of "apps" through Google's "app store," and royalties on Google Payments as users purchase the apps. Google doesn't care about making a half a cent per minute marking up phone calls ... that missed opportunity cost is simply investment that will allow them to rake in ~$150 each on millions of handsets. And remember that cell phones are consumables ... remember the "new in 2" deals where subscribers are encouraged to get a new phone every two years? It's a self perpetuating money machine.
