| Promise VESSRAID
Hello,
I am thinking about setting up a series of back up servers in the event that the entire HP c3000 chasiss gets messed up. It doesnt have to have super fast I/Os, but i would like it to support iSCSI so i can use it with XenServer.
I had a meeting with CDW and they recommended the PROMISE VSSRAID 1840I, but i would like to get some inputs from any of you that have used the hardware or have bought something similar.
I dont have to get PROMISE, but the same solution on HP goes for over $10K, he quoted the V1840I with 16x2TB HDDs for under $8K.
This is not for primary use, it is to be used as redundancy until the primary equipment gets fixed...
So has anyone used this company..? Or do you have others similar to it..? »www.promise.com/product/product_···t_id=226

twizlar I dont think so. Premium join:2003-12-24 Brantford, ON | As a back-up I would just roll your own iSCSI box, way cheaper. |

| reply to PToN For use with Xenserver I wouldn't recommend it, and generally speaking as far as storage goes I wouldn't recommend any promise products for use in a commercial/enterprise environment. Something worth considering when debating how much to spend on storage, if there was one thing that would cripple your company if lost what would it be... DATA, hardware can fail (ram, processors, boxes, network equipment) and is all relatively easy to replace if you have adequate spares, data on the other hand is not. once it's 'gone' it's actually gone... |

| Would you elaborate on why you wouldnt recommend promise..? And this is only for back-up purposes, our main servers are very reliable and mostly redundant, but if the chasis (C3000) or the EVA controllers get all messed up we lose everything.
So having something inexpensive to support our primary equipment is what i am looking for.
Do you have any recommendations? i dont need fiber or high speed I/O, i need it to support iSCSI, RAID and be somewhat redundant(power supplies, NICs)

| Hi Pton, I'm not sure where lOOker is coming from but Promise Technology is used in many business environments. They build Apple's RAID solution and just this September they showed the VessRAID at VMWorld as VMWare ready. I too am looking at the VessRAID for archival (D2D) backup with Backup Exec. The price point is just too good. Work your rep for better pricing. For example if you look at drive prices on NewEgg.com, the WD 2TB RE-4GP which is certified in the VessRAID is $289.99. It's the only currently certified 2TB RAID level drive. The less expensive 2TB WD20EADS seems to have had a firmware update that prevents the end user from enabling Western Digitals TLER technolgy for use in RAID environments. There should be other 2TB certified drives soon as I know Samsung and Seagate have them in the pipeline. Then check thenerds.net (I know odd right) for VessRAID pricing. You can see that the 1840i can be had for around $2167, »www.thenerds.net/index.php?page=···&x=0&y=0 . That'll get you 32TB of Raw storage for about $6791 plus shipping. That's .212cents/GB. 1TB RAID level drives from newegg will put your pricing at around .28cents/GB. Either way, I can't find anyone who can touch that price with the features of the VessRAID in iSCSI. I have been pricing against a Dell MD3000i as we are pretty much a Dell shop, also have Equallogic SAN. I'm positive that I'll go this route for my archive storage. I need it before the holidays so Promise seems to be in the right place at the right time. I'll post back what I end up doing. Good luck. RH |
