Site Forum Misdirection

When I log on to dsl reports home page and hit the Forums tab I am directed to the Tools section. From Tools I must select Forums to get to Forums. This only occurs on one of two computers. I have tried flushing and registering DNS cache but this still persist.

Windows XP SP3 and Firefox 3.5.4 on a fresh install. Linksys router and Online Armor Firewalls.

Would any members of dsl reports have a suggestion for a remedy to this two step?

Thank you.

The next time you log on, before you click the Forums link hover your mouse over it and see what URL displays at the bottom right of your screen.

What the link should be:

Link to Tools:

edit: Does this happen using another browser on that machine?

Thank you for the reply.

The All Forum URL link is as it should be indicated but takes me to Tools, Speed Test. Again in the Tools, Speed test hovering the mouse over All Forums indicates All Forums but on second step takes me to All Forums.

This is only happening on the XP Pro machine but the links work as they should on the 2000 Pro machine. I'm baffled!

On the XP Pro machine, does it happen using a different browser?

You might try clearing out your Temporary Internet Files cache.

fatness, thank you for the other browser suggestion.
When useing Internet Explorer the dsl report links all work properly so I have to assume it is an unidentified issue with the Firefox browser.
I suppose I could uninstall Firefox and try a new install to further trouble shoot the issue. That will be my next course of action.

Instead of a new install, just create a new firefox profile.

This is what i have tried with no further success;
1. Ran Firefox in safe mode.
2. Uninstalled/Reinstalled Firefox
3.Per MSeng's suggestion cleaned cache
4.Cleared FF paging file in Windows.
5.Soft reset Linksys router.
6.Flushed and re-registered DNS cache.

nwricket suggest creating a new profile. I was under the belief that an account holders profile is static from the creation date and is not PC specific as in the case of no problems with the 2000 Pro machine and no problems with the XP Pro machine when useing Internet Explorer 6.

Both machines have near identical software setups the exception of Online Armor on the XP Pro machine. All software and patches are fully up to date. No viruses, malware or rootkits detected by multiple test.

I believe nwrickert See Profile was suggesting that you form a new profile within Firefox, not on the website. He (or others) can tell you better than I can how to do that; it's not hard.

Just for shits and giggles, try turning off Online Armor on the XP machine, make sure the Firefox cache is cleared, and try logging in to see if it happens.

Fatness, disabling OA has no effect on DSL Report and per La Luna's suggestion, I created a new profile. Under the new profile I no longer have to do the two step to go to Forums.

This solution works but leaves me with several questions.

Is there a method to edit the original profile or merge the original and new profiles so as not to loose all of my Add-ons, plug-ins, and favorites without corrupting the new profile?

I guess that not many people are as anal as I am concerning program glitches and would just live with a two step.

As a side note; I would like to say that as a semi-retired Senior Citizen having started my computer literacy with a Windows 95 Crash Box, my knowledge, and interest in successful PC safety, set-up, trouble shooting, maintenance and repair, is gratefully due to the invaluable, friendly and knowledgeable forum members and contributors here on DSL Reports. Additionally; Google is my friend, particularly when it involves MS Windows bugs and errors that I believe have become less frequent.

I suggest you go back to your original profile but then disable all extensions. If that fixes the problem, then enable the extensions, one at a time, to see which one is causing the problem.

You can get your bookmarks (favorites) to the new profile by copying the file "places.sqlite" from the old profile directory to the new one. Make sure that firefox is not running when doing that copy.

I wouldn't live with it; it's a pain in the neck. Try nwrickert See Profile's advice about disabling extensions in your original profile. You're getting this narrowed down.

Fatness,
I disabled per nwrickert's suggestion all extensions and plug-ins. No joy. I exported my favorites folder for future import, uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox and created a new DSL Reports Favorites link. All was well and no more two step.

I imported my old favorites folder and LOW AND BEHOLD, the two step for DSL Reports was back. I was about to tear my hair out.

I deleted DSL reports from my Favorites, cleared all cache and cookies, cleared and re-registered DNS cache rebooted, logged into DSL Reports, registered DSL Reports in Favorites, and all is well. I know that I tried this last procedure before with no joy and the URL for DSL Reports Home Page did not change.

What I am uncertain of is my original problem two step would appear after log on to the home page and then going to the Forums link which would take me to Tools, Speed Test that was a Google Advertisement page. I am wondering if it was a Google slight of hand that created the two step. I will just classify this as one of the mysteries of life.

Again, I want to thank everyone for your help and suggestions.

If there was a google ad, and you usually do not see ads on the site when logged in, that would mean you were logged out for that page. Perhaps the old bookmark was for broadbandreports.com, and not for dslreports.com?
