| There are alternatives... 1. Verizon offers its $60-a-month MBB without a contract if you buy your device outright or have one already. 2. Millenicom offers the same service at similar pricing, albeit in an easier to find manner (they dn't sell on-contract mobile broadband). 3. AT&T offers its $60-a-month MBB without a contract if you buy your device outright or have one already (I'm using this at the moment). 4. Sprint's data network is available through Virgin Mobile at rates better than what Verizon is selling, though they're still crappy. 5. Millenicom offers unlimited-use Sprint-based MBB for $70 per month. You have to buy the modem or bring your own, but there's no contract. 6. Millenicom offers unlimited-use T-Mobile-based MBB for $70 per month. You have to buy the modem, but there's no contract and at the moment it's the only way to get T-Mobile 3G on a data card (TMo phased out webConnect when they intro'd their new plans a week or two ago). 7. CricKet offers 5GB MBB for $40 per month with no contract, though to get their $50 modem mail-in rebate you have to stick around for a few months. CricKet also appears to offer 10GB MBB in some cases for $60 or so per month.
Yes, the Verizon PAYG MBB option sucks rather badly. However you've got plenty of options, and Verizon does have the lowest price if you want to use their network for a day to check e-mail or surf the web (no video though). |
