I got a laundry list of things Apple missed on with the iPhone as phone and not one of these complaints touched any of them. I will agree that as a pocket web browser, no other phone comes close but every other feature the iPhone has, there is a better phone for it, nevermind everything it's missing.
a333 posted : I'm not sure, but it might have something to do with the handoff algorithm used when switching between 3G and 2G. In my case, I just force my Sony Ericsson w518 to stick to 3G only, since the NYC area has pretty solid 3G coverage as far as I am concerned. On dual (GSM/UMTS) mode, the phone tends to be really switching-happy, and constantly drops 3G for seemingly no rhyme or reason, although I get 3-5 bars of 3G at the same location on 3G-only mode.

-a333
--
Physics: Will you break the laws of physics, or will the laws of physics break you?
If physicists stand on each other's shoulders, computer scientists stand on each other's toes, and computer programmers dig each other's graves.

anon posted : I've been with Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T and they pretty much offer the same quality of service, it just depends where in the country you happen to be. :uhh:

I've come to believe that it's not AT&T's network that has an issue, but the iPhone OS. I use an HTC Tilt which is also on the 3G network, and I have no issues whatsoever (except when I mess up my network settings and can't get on the internet, but that's a different issue altogether :D ) At the same time, from the same location I try to use my iPhone and I get shitty QoS, and that's even though I have a full set of bars and it says that I'm connected to the 3G network.

The iPhone also has a hard time transitioning from WiFi to 3G and vice-versa. If you happen to be streaming audio or video, and especially if you had a good stream on 3G, as soon as you hit a network that requires secure authentication, that stream is gone. Even with WiFi, the phone can be unable to to connect to the internet (and once again that's with a full Tree - not sure what to call the WiFi indicator)

Sometimes, even though it shows that I have a great connection, I can't connect to anything. It's so bad, that sometimes, I can send out texts or phone either. The only time I have no issues with my iPhone is when I put it in Airplane mode, and just play games (for hours....don't tell my bosses ;)) The trick for a long battery duration is to turn off Bluetooth, WiFi, 3G, and Roaming, and to set the backlight to automatic. I can actually play for several hours that way.

My other phones (HTC Tilt and BB 8330) don't have any of those issues. My iPhone used to actually work pretty dam good before the 3.0 OS roll out, but I didn't have Cut, Copy, and Paste. I think they screwed up a lot of things with that OS version, and they'll never tell. Also, I seem to be getting a lot more apps that just quit without warning. That never used to happen before. Much like a lot of folks, I absolutely hate my iPhone as a phone, but I love it as a small computer. I'm probably going to wait and trade my iPhone for an iTouch, and I'm going to get the new HTC Tilt II. :p

Here's a suggestion for bad reception.

anon posted : Until recently, I cussed AT&T a lot because the signal at my house was like almost flat-lined (1-2 bars). Then I saw a suggestion on the web that how you hold the phone makes a big difference. At first I thought this was BS, but I tried it and gained 2, sometimes 3 bars. Here's the deal. Instead of holding the phone so that your hand is flat against the back of the unit, hold it by the sides with your hand away from back. The phone antenna must be located near the bottom of the phone and having your hand over it attenuates the signal. If you have a weak signal, try putting the phone in its dock and watch them bars go up. This is not voodoo. It works!

Verizon Wireless works like shit.

Other places, it's vice-versa and so on.

Exactly. I have the iphone, and I hardly EVER have a dropped call. And for work we have Verizon dingleberries (the curve). Those fuckin things couldn't suck more balls.

The reception is good. But the phone itself sucks major dong. The keyboard blows, to navigate through it is a pain in the ass. I can't type for shit on the damn thing cause my fingers are too big. So I adjusted the sig on my emails to say, "Please excuse the spelling errors due to email being type on Blackberry Curve"...or something like that.

The phone can only be as good as the network it is on. And the network can only be as good as the area supported. And AT&T is supported very well in my area. Hell, so is Verizon. Sprint however, blows chunks in this area...and pretty much every where else I've been to with those phones.
--
Photoshop these nuts in your mouth.

Crypto_Bug posted : I have to agree with others, it isnt really the phone it is the fact that AT&T has such a CRAPPY network. I used an IPhone but ended up dumping it and going to Verizon because AT&T just sucks. I loved the phone but Apples choice of carrier was well lets just say .... was not the right one.
--
Certs: CCNA, GPEN, GCIH, GCFW, GSEC, GCIA, GCFA

djrobx posted : Gutter trash? World's worst? Really? That's a little sensational.

I don't have a problem hearing callers. Calls dropping is an AT&T thing and my iPhone is no worse than my previous 3G phones.

The only point I really agree with is the issue about the phone not ringing. But my old phones did that too. I think these are mostly AT&T problems.

With all the moaning about MMS - it's nice to have MMS that actually just works. On my WinMo phones I was usually treated to a red exclamation point and would have to reboot to actually see it. It worked alright on my Motorola V551, but the thing was so slug slow it wasn't really enjoyable.

I haven't had any issue with the battery life either. I can usually go about 48 hours between charges, which is actuallly more than many of my older phones. Of course, the iPhone is so fun to play with you can burn the battery up quick, but that has nothing to with its capabilties as a phone.
--
AT&T U-Hearse
Your funeral.
