| Alternatives to Smartview for Server 2003
Hi
I'm trying to get my lovely new novatel u760 working on a Windows Server 2003 machine. I've configured the usb device on an XP PC and connected to t'Internet. I managed to successfully install the drivers on my Server 2003 PC, but now I'm stuck.
The Smartview software refuses to install (pops up a message saying "You must be running XP, 2000 or Vista" and closes).
Is there any other software I can use to get this blasted modem to connect?
Many thanks! |

| You can try Novatel Connection Manager. Details are in the second post of my website: »www.evdo-tips.com -- ... need help? »evdo-tips.com/ |

| Thank you for your reply.
Unfortunately, when I follow the link on your site, I select my device from the list (Ovation U760) and on the following page, there's no link to the Novatel Connection Manager - just the Smartview software.
I'll take the Connection Manager from another Novatel product & see if that'll install on Windows Server and recognize this darned device... |

mmm. That software isn't happy either. It'll install, but then says "Insert device" and I do, but it never sees it.
The device is installed happily into windows, but the connection manager doesn't see it (maybe because it's for a different model?) |

| email Novatel support and tell them you want to use their software for the 760 - not SmartView. With luck, they may be accommodating, might give you other solutions as well. -- ... need help? »evdo-tips.com/ |

| reply to laptopgirl Here we go, I had this same issue, the solution:
Step 1: Download the latest version of the software
Do not attempt to install yet, put it on your desktop.
This file is an executable, but it is actually just a compressed self-extracting archive.
Step 2: If you don't already have software to unpack the archive manually, I recommend WinRAR. Available here: »www.download.com/WinRAR/3000-...···677.html This is shareware, but you can use it as a trial, then uninstall it.
Step 3: Now we need Orca which is an MSI editor. Microsoft provides Orca with their SDK, but you don't need the whole SDK, just Orca. You can get it here: »www.softpedia.com/progDownloa...···861.html
Step 4: Go ahead and install WinRAR and Orca.
Step 5: Open WinRAR. You should be presented with a large window. Drag the Sprint SmartView for Windows installer to the WinRAR main window. You should be able to see all the files in the installer now.
Step 6: Extract the installer files, I prefer the Desktop, just so I can keep track of them. IMPORTANT- Make sure you Select ALL the files for extracting to the Desktop.
Step 7: Things should look a little cluttered on the Desktop with all those icons. Open Orca. Orca should open with a nice blank window that looks like an Excel spreadsheet. Drag the file called Setup to the Orca window. IMPORTANT- Make sure you only drag Setup.
Step 8: In the Tables column, scroll down to the entry titled "LaunchCondition". Select it (it will highlight in blue). In the Condition column, that one little line is what prevents SmartView from installing on unsupported Windows Operating systems
Step 9: Right Click this line: "(VersionNT=500 And ServicePackLevel>2) Or (VersionNT=501 And ServicePackLevel>0) Or VersionNT>502" and select Drop Row from the menu. Click OK to remove the row. When you close Orca, it will ask you if you want to save changes to Setup, click Yes. (That line should be blank when you are done)
Step 10: Double Click the file on your desktop called "Sprint_CM" which I assume is an abbreviation for Connection Manager (from the old days). This will launch the SmartView setup. If you click any of the other installers, it will not work citing a missing file.
As you will notice when running the installer, none of the drivers have been officially signed (like that's unusual). Just click install anyway. After you finish the install, reboot and insert the Sierra Wireless Compass in any USB port. You should here lots of "hardware insert" sounds as the various COM and NMEA (for GPS) ports come online.
If you haven't already activated your device, that is an option from the tools drop down menu.
To get the best speed out of the connection: Disconnect first. Select Tools/Settings/Mobile Select Manual device selection, and choose the Sierra Wireless Compass Roaming Selection = Sprint Only Connection Type = NDIS (this uses a virtual wireless connection for 3x the speed) |
