NetEqualizer issues?

Installed a NetEq over the weekend and have been having problems ever since. Not sure if the problems are related to the NetEq or something else, but end users are experiencing intermittent connectivity problems - dropped packets and high pings. This happens both when accessing outside the network and also within the network. The issue arrises for about 1-2 minutes and then everything returns to normal.

I've sent an email to NetEq support, but wanted to see if anyone here has any ideas or has witnessed the same problem.

I have seen a similar problem like this before. The problem was with the nic card in the machine (core router)that the Neteq was connected to. The core router would work fine when bypassing the Neteq. Try changing the nic cards on the machines connected to the Neteq or just put a simple switch between them and see if that helps.

If NetEq support hasn't gotten back to you feel free to IM me your parameters set in the NetEq. I can have a look to see if there is an issue that stands out.

I have also had this problem in the past. A simple reboot fixed the issue. It would only happen every couple weeks?.

I think a long time ago we had the same issue, we found that it was because we had a really old fw loaded and needed to be upgraded. But before we could upgrade it we had to install a larger memory card. It took about an hour of down time to do the whole change.
we are running 2.43c 1u version now.

I think as long as you have the purchased license for the NetEq they are, but I could be wrong.
Steve at NetEq would be able to tell you for sure. I found the email that I sent to them in regards to the issue we were having. Once I upgraded the FW all was fine. Here was the email:

>Currently we are running version "2.30b 1u" on our main NetEq >in our

Version 4 looks way cool. I see a software support agreement in our future.

One of the problems I have with NetEq is the 'appliance' nature of the product. A 1U form factor for a single server is pretty much obsolete these days.

We are almost at the point where we have to upgrade our NE2000-45 to something much bigger. That is a nice problem to have, but the data centre where our network edge stuff resides is quite expensive per U of rack space.

Bearing in mind that our existing NetEq is already on a SuperMicro platform, I would really like to assign the new high capacity system to 1/4 of a SuperMicro Twin2 SYS-6026TT-BTF quad-node server unit.

Inside this single quad-node server unit, I figure we can build a decent VMware redundant server pair, add a NetEQ and also build a really good high capacity MikroTik edge gateway. All in 2U of rack space.

I need to have a chat with Art about this and see what could be done. It would be better to spend a few extra bucks at this stage and contain the OpEx for the next few years.

Can you put this in perspective for me? How much is 1U per month? Is bandwidth billed separately?

About $200 per U per month all up, Bandwidth is billed seperately.

They are very proud of that inch and a half aren't they

That would be nice to get a software only version, or VM for NE at that point for sure.

That's my thinking Gunther.

I'm fine with them locking it to a given hardware feature like a processor serial number, but it would be great to have it running in my choice of hardware. Obviously that would have to be restricted to something they knew would work properly, but something in the SuperMicro range should be appropriate.

At the end of the day its the software people really want anyway. The kernel would or should be a larger file, compiled with more ethernet drivers and hardware drivers. And would be a big seller for them i would think (they used to do this i believe anyway).. Limit the support offerings for the software only version or charge premiums for it, and you'ed have a win/win I would think. But thats a different thread

On a different note.
We installed a NetEq-POE the other day on one of our towers with less than 80 customers. Works like a charm, easy to install and is exactly like the larger RM NetEq but only about as big as a small desk top router, so it was easy to install in the enclosure.
Same GUI as well.
