Brano : I guess, it's personal choice. ...anyway, here's my short story.
When I started linux many years ago I've tried both KDE and GNOME. I've decided for KDE at that time. After openSUSE upgraded to KDE4.0 i found it unusable and tried GNOME again ...couldn't stand it. Then I've tried Xface ...liked it but found quite limited. By that time KDE4.1 was out and it was somehow usable. Later 4.2 proven to be very stable without a single issue.
I acknowledge that KDE 4.0 and 4.1 had many issues, but for those open minded you should try 4.2++. Granted, there are some differences from 3.5 but 3.5 user will adjust very quickly and as I I'm sure you'll find the "new features" quite useful over the time.

Keep your mind open, give it a try. You can always revert to GNOME or Xfce but there is a good chance you won't ;)

P.S: I'll upgrade to openSUSE 11.2 / KDE 4.3 over the weekend and will post my impressions.
--
openSUSE 11.1, KDE 4.2

Gotta love FiOS!), and installed it with the default KDE desktop.
It SUCKS, and I'm a KDE devotee.
It's just *too* different for me, and I'm sure the gf's son would go bonkers if he had to learn a totally new DE *again* after weaning him off Windows.
I re-installed it with the xfce desktop, and it's "better" to me, and to him.
t0rn : I just completely broke my openSUSE 11.1 installation while trying to fix a Nvidia / display issue. I won't be able to use my desktop computer until 11.2 is released.

Will it be possible to install to a new encrypted root partition using the DVD, while preserving my existing encrypted home partition? (I am not currently using LVM.)

I read that the DVD installer will only support installing to an encrypted LVM volume, and not a traditional partition.

Man, I really messed up big this time, all because I just had to upgrade my Nvidia driver's when nothing was wrong with the older drivers.

A lesson learned. I hope openSUSE 11.2 will bring my PC back to working order.

So stable and fast on my P4 3.0ghz with 1 gig memory. Runs as fast as gnome does on it anyway. VERY impressed with what they have done. If you like pretty desktops kde 4.3 is the way to go.
