Weird stuff happening lost graphics on avatar-Script blocking stops.
I did try MSE and computer freezes after installed and after reboot 1-2 minutes after start up. Microsoft says ant ivirus running but it was not when installed Windows 7 and uninstalled Avast and still freezes. No answers form them.

So that is why asking about another program

MSE would be perfect if they made it a complete all in one product like Comodo Internet Security.

The Software Firewall makes all the difference to me.

If MSE added firewall I would switch from Comodo.

Of course MSE would have to be easy on resources like Comodo.
Why would they need to add a firewall when they have one built into the OS?

Avira AntiVir. Out of all of the ones I have used, this one is my favorite, and I think best. I use the free version, which has all of the features you need. Without the little icon in the taskbar, I would not even know it is running in the background. I don't worry about getting infected.

You should *never* run more than one antivirus product that provides real time protection as they will conflict, causing performance issues, system instability, and may even cause protection to be compromised.
MSE should not be installed on a system that includes any other antivirus program.

I have Avast! 5.0.221 on 2 Vista computers with no scanning issues for POP3 or IMAP4. What client are you using? Have seen some reports of gmail issues with the Thunderbird 3 beta, but no problems with TB 2.0.23 that I am using. Also liked MSE, but prefer the Avast! 5 features plus controllability and vendor support.
I'm a fan of Avast. I'm not dissatisfied with 4.8 on Windows 7 by any means, but I like to see the new products before they're released. How do I get ahold of a beta of 5? The link from their forums (Google result) is dead.

For some reason I really like MSE. Hassle free and seems to work. I kind of forgot it was there until it caught something.

The question should be not "what is the best AV" (there is no "best"), but why are you having issues with your machine and AV's?

I've used Avast for years on two machines and never experienced any of the problems you've described in your AV threads. So for me, Avast is the "best".

Looking for a the "best" anti virus program that works with Windows 7. Tried Avast and do not like. Besides AVG what is the safest and best anti virus program out there? Thanks.
Again and again and again and again: the "best" don't exist.
True dat. I never answer a post looking for the "best" anything. It's purely in the eye of the beholder, and all too often the beholder wants to argue.

Let me second the motion for Microsoft Security Essentials. I couldn't possibly have the ability to test it like a lab could, but I am seeing some evidence that its detection capabilities are pretty darned good for known threats. I have had an old 250GB hard drive from my previous system attached to my current system. It has been there just one month under three years. During the previous years, I have used McAfee, Norton and AVG, with Norton being most recent, which I used for one year until my subscription ran out. Immediately after switching to MSE, a threat ignored during numerous full scans over the years was detected by MSE. I thought that was nice, but you are going to see threats detected by one product and not by another... that is just a fact of life and it doesn't necessarily mean one product is better than another with a single incident.

Fast forward to tonight when I installed a hard drive in my computer from a computer that a kid trashed, that wouldn't boot up. I ran a Malwarebytes scan on the drive that incidentally was protected by McAfee when the machine was running. Malwarebytes detected nothing on the drive, but as it scanned, various file hits triggered MSE detections of four threats. This could have been because MSE was first to detect and kept Malwarebytes from detecting the threat. Then again Malwarebytes was doing the scan and you would think it would be first, but I'll leave that up to the experts to decide. I just have a strong feeling MB, would have never detected these even though it is a pretty effective product.

I'm not saying MSE is better or worse than other products out there, but my recent experiences have left me with the impression that its detection database is quite good. From what I can tell the product doesn't exert a heavy load on your system and it leaves you alone until there is something worth paying attention to. I feel as secure with it as I have felt with any other product I have used.

The picture above is the detections from the scan today that caught 4 threats as well as the scheduled scan on my own PC last weekend that picked up something undetected for years.

Edit: Missed the difficulties you are having installing MSE. Are you running any anti-spyware products that might be causing the problem? If not you need to check your startups to see if some previous product has not fully uninstalled. I wouldn't ignore this message.

This is an example of how you know you've finally got the right AV on your particular system: you're happy with the interface, it catches the baddies, and you don't even notice it on your computer.

- The interface should be easy for you to use.

- The AV shouldn't cause conflicts with your other software.

- The updates should be frequent and should be unnoticeable, that is, everything else shouldn't slow down when the AV is updating.

- It should be able to scan your particular email program.

- Scans should be able to handle compressed files.

- It shouldn't be resource intensive.

I don't know how it works with the free AV's, but with my NAV/NIS programs, the background scans only run when the computer is idle, so there is no impact when I am using the computer.

Totally agree no such thing as the best, it all depends on your taste and what you think is the best.
...and what you've tried.
...and what you've paid for (or are grateful to have for free).
...and what hasn't messed you up.

Using MSE Here, And have to say this time around haven't noticed any slowdowns or anything, barely notice it's even there

(this PC was freshly reformatted about 1-2 weeks ago, so in Great shape--so maybe why it's working better now)

I'm pleased to notice there are apparently still people with common sense, supporting my endless repeated yell there is no best antivirus. They even support my yell with good motivation, thanks folks! OTOH I am realistic and know that majority will ignore all well-meant/motivated advice..

Hello,

First, you may want to have a look at the following sites, as they have fantastic reviews of a multitude of anti-virus and other security software:

Second: I have spent the last couple of months assessing various anti-virus packages on my own machine, after choosing several candidates based on the top performers in a number of the tests presented on those two sites.

After a couple of months, I had whittled the list down to (1) Nod32 v.4, (2) G-Data and (3) Avira AntiVir Premium.

(1) Nod32: I was a Nod32 user since version 1 and have always considered it a superior product. However, after 2.7 they have gone downhill, IMHO. It has become somewhat of a heavy resource user and very intrusive when it comes to internet-related activities. Is can cause various pauses in system operation and ultimately this becomes really tiring.

(2) G-data was quite good and is extremely fast in terms of scanning rates. However, I found it to be fairly intrusive as well and at times caught it using up to 348 MEGS of memory when it was performing background operations, which is unacceptable to me. Also, in comparison with Nod32 and Avira (~34 megs), the G-data program is a whopping 272 megs...for me, that sends up the red-flags as a sign of bloatware or inefficient software design.

(3) Avira AntiVir Premium: I have just finished my first week with Avira and I must say that I am pleasantly surprised. It seems to have a small footprint, and is very non-intrusive - so far. Scanning rates seem to be fairly quick. Setup was easy, but can be complex if you chose to tinker with the advanced options. Overall, my initial impression is that I have found a new anti-virus package with Avira. So, unless it begins to behave badly over the next couple of weeks, I am ditching trusty old Nod32 v 2.7 and moving over to Avira.

I hope this helps and, again, I really do encourage everybody to have a look at the two sites referenced above. They are a treasure-trove of information and data with regards to tens of anti-virus packages. You have to register with Virus Bulletin, but it is painless and well worth it in light of the data they provide.

Thanks for those detailed comments.

I would LOVE for MSE to have worked.

But on a Intel Pentium machine that I have with 1.80 GHz processor, and 1.0 GB of RAM, and with all unnecessary Windows services disabled, MSE still slowed my machine horribly.

MS says that 1.0 GB of RAM is the minimum requirement. Some folks have posted that MSE has worked for them with less.

But---seriously---does ANY other AV (or suite) specify such a high minimum for RAM ?!

Can anyone think of any?

Microsoft does not know how to make ANYTHING that's not bloated.
