| reply to Cheese A Basic firewall that just stealth's ports is not good enough.
A cheap router can do that.
A good software firewall is software specific, if you want to block software from running you can. It is all in the configuration of a Good Software Firewall.
Last I checked Windows XP or Vista or 7 has any of that other than a basic stealth port. |

| reply to amark Back in July, the avast! folks asked us to write a testimonial. This was my contribution:
Back in the Windows 98 days, I evaluated all available FREE antivirus programs. At the time I was using a paid version of a "Name Brand" antivirus program on my two computers. At the time, I had determined that if I ever decided to use a FREE antivirus program, avast! would be the one that I would use. I put my notes away and that was it for several years.
I did continue to evaluate avast! from time to time and even joined the avast! forum in December of 2003 to keep up with how avast! was doing.
I finally installed the 2005 version of that "Name Brand" antivirus programs on my two computers but began experiencing problems- not the complaints that most people experienced - bloat and bogging down their computers but warning messages like asking me to activate the program which I had done months earlier and also a message that the program did not have a repair feature and that I should uninstall the program and reinstall. A point of interest is that the uninstall program which this company has developed is probably one of the best things they have produced in recent years.
Finally, in late 2006 I received another message telling me to uninstall and reinstall the program. When I began the install process, I received a message saying that I had attempted too many installs and must somehow show proof that I had purchased the program. I had the proof but was so sick of problems with this software that I gave up and installed avast! on my THREE computers. As a side point, I had the 2006 versions of this software which I sold on the Internet for $1.00 US. I pity the persons who bought them.
I now have 5 computers- 4 desktops and one laptop and they all have avast! installed. The desktop that I use the most has avast! Professional installed. I really didn't have to buy the Pro version since I an a hobbyist but I like the added features and also wanted to say thanks to the folks in the Czech Republic.
Needless to say, I am extremely pleased with the results I have gotten from avast! and something very drastic would have to happen before I would ever change my mind.
I think that the friends to whom I have recommended avast! would agree with me.
Thank you avast!
P.S. They never even said thank you. -- Printed on 100% recycled bytes |

| reply to amark Given that a new OS is in question, this might prove interesting. It's far more relevant though that there might be lock-downs inherent to the OS that need addressing.
Even now after a couple of decades, I don't have issues with a virus I didn't ask for, to solve a problem. Habits [Surfing] still account for 94% of the problem and the other 6% relate to poor email habits.
It is a little unnerving to go helta-skelta into a new OS, though and security. |

| reply to Surfinusa said by Surfinusa :MSE would be perfect if they made it a complete all in one product like Comodo Internet Security. The Software Firewall makes all the difference to me. If MSE added firewall I would switch from Comodo. Of course MSE would have to be easy on resources like Comodo. you DO Know Vista and 7 both have incoming and outgoing firewalls to start with right? |

| reply to DownTheShore said by DownTheShore :said by normat :For some reason I really like MSE. Hassle free and seems to work. I kind of forgot it was there until it caught something. This is an example of how you know you've finally got the right AV on your particular system: you're happy with the interface, it catches the baddies, and you don't even notice it on your computer. - The interface should be easy for you to use. - The AV shouldn't cause conflicts with your other software. - The updates should be frequent and should be unnoticeable, that is, everything else shouldn't slow down when the AV is updating. - It should be able to scan your particular email program. - Scans should be able to handle compressed files. - It shouldn't be resource intensive. I don't know how it works with the free AV's, but with my NAV/NIS programs, the background scans only run when the computer is idle, so there is no impact when I am using the computer. not only can MSE scan zips and rars but inside installers too so much win |

@bellsouth.net | reply to amark My only gripes with MSE is that if you exclude a file or directory, it won't scan the objects if you right-click and attempt a manual scan either. Also, the full scan needs a pause feature. |

And block ports only for those specific programs with Plain old Windows firewall ?? |

Doesn't mean I don't have one but is any ant-virus perfect?
Besides that Comodo's firewall is what I am happy with for a free product it is stellar. |

Well, Grail Buddy, any Antivirus and/or security product that changes the basic function or modifies any fuction of the operating system, whether permanently or temporarilly, WITHOUT GIVING THE END USER ample warning BEFORE THE PRODUCT IS USED and/or PURCHASED, is a heap of horse dung to me...and it's morally, ethically, and maybe even legally wrong to me... Period..
That's why Norton disabling's of system restore without a pre-usage warning and the DRM issue makes it horse dung. and lord knows, I tried to forgive Norton a couple of times, even due to "RandyBell's" protests in the past... -- I'm proud to be a troublemaker!
