Mele20 : Right on, Jim! I too left Norton forever when Symantec pulled the DRM crap with the 2003 version. I had Norton 2001 for two years and really liked it but that was the last version (or 2002 which as Randy said was not enough upgrade from 2001 to warrant purchase) I will use. I was right to stay away from them as look what they did with System Restore. That is arrogance and disregard for the user.

As for the "historic" aspects of our thread on Kaspersky chkdsk problems, it cannot be disputed that our thread was the reason Kaspersky was forced to its knees and forced to admit what they had been doing. That makes our thread historic. We made a REAL DIFFERENCE with that thread. It empowered Kaspersky users and WE did it. NOT members of some other Security forum. Not even members of KAV's forums where it was being discussed but Kaspersky was ignoring it and denying and ignoring and denying. We, the members of this forum, exposed that mess and that makes the thread historic and should make every member here proud to belong to this forum.

Ironically, Avira paid versions evidently have a problem with chkdsk on Windows 7. Something in those versions is apparently causing chkdsk to mark the volume as dirty and to run at every boot. But I am confident that whatever is causing this that Avira will get to the bottom of it quickly. They have done the opposite of Kaspersky and are appealing to anyone having this problem to contact via PM and get a package to download to help test and isolate the problem so they can fix it.
--
When governments fear people, there is liberty.
jadinolf : Back in July, the avast! folks asked us to write a testimonial. This was my contribution:

Back in the Windows 98 days, I evaluated all available FREE antivirus programs. At the time I was using a paid version of a "Name Brand" antivirus program on my two computers. At the time, I had determined that if I ever decided to use a FREE antivirus program, avast! would be the one that I would use. I put my notes away and that was it for several years.

I did continue to evaluate avast! from time to time and even joined the avast! forum in December of 2003 to keep up with how avast! was doing.

I finally installed the 2005 version of that "Name Brand" antivirus programs on my two computers but began experiencing problems- not the complaints that most people experienced - bloat and bogging down their computers but warning messages like asking me to activate the program which I had done months earlier and also a message that the program did not have a repair feature and that I should uninstall the program and reinstall. A point of interest is that the uninstall program which this company has developed is probably one of the best things they have produced in recent years.

Finally, in late 2006 I received another message telling me to uninstall and reinstall the program. When I began the install process, I received a message saying that I had attempted too many installs and must somehow show proof that I had purchased the program. I had the proof but was so sick of problems with this software that I gave up and installed avast! on my THREE computers. As a side point, I had the 2006 versions of this software which I sold on the Internet for $1.00 US. I pity the persons who bought them.

I now have 5 computers- 4 desktops and one laptop and they all have avast! installed. The desktop that I use the most has avast! Professional installed. I really didn't have to buy the Pro version since I an a hobbyist but I like the added features and also wanted to say thanks to the folks in the Czech Republic.

Needless to say, I am extremely pleased with the results I have gotten from avast! and something very drastic would have to happen before I would ever change my mind.

I think that the friends to whom I have recommended avast! would agree with me.

Thank you avast!

P.S.
anon : Hello,

First, you may want to have a look at the following sites, as they have fantastic reviews of a multitude of anti-virus and other security software:

Second: I have spent the last couple of months assessing various anti-virus packages on my own machine, after choosing several candidates based on the top performers in a number of the tests presented on those two sites.

After a couple of months, I had whittled the list down to (1) Nod32 v.4, (2) G-Data and (3) Avira AntiVir Premium.

(1) Nod32: I was a Nod32 user since version 1 and have always considered it a superior product. However, after 2.7 they have gone downhill, IMHO. It has become somewhat of a heavy resource user and very intrusive when it comes to internet-related activities. Is can cause various pauses in system operation and ultimately this becomes really tiring.

(2) G-data was quite good and is extremely fast in terms of scanning rates. However, I found it to be fairly intrusive as well and at times caught it using up to 348 MEGS of memory when it was performing background operations, which is unacceptable to me. Also, in comparison with Nod32 and Avira (~34 megs), the G-data program is a whopping 272 megs...for me, that sends up the red-flags as a sign of bloatware or inefficient software design.

(3) Avira AntiVir Premium: I have just finished my first week with Avira and I must say that I am pleasantly surprised. It seems to have a small footprint, and is very non-intrusive - so far. Scanning rates seem to be fairly quick. Setup was easy, but can be complex if you chose to tinker with the advanced options. Overall, my initial impression is that I have found a new anti-virus package with Avira. So, unless it begins to behave badly over the next couple of weeks, I am ditching trusty old Nod32 v 2.7 and moving over to Avira.

I hope this helps and, again, I really do encourage everybody to have a look at the two sites referenced above. They are a treasure-trove of information and data with regards to tens of anti-virus packages. You have to register with Virus Bulletin, but it is painless and well worth it in light of the data they provide.

JP

Kramer : Let me second the motion for Microsoft Security Essentials. I couldn't possibly have the ability to test it like a lab could, but I am seeing some evidence that its detection capabilities are pretty darned good for known threats. I have had an old 250GB hard drive from my previous system attached to my current system. It has been there just one month under three years. During the previous years, I have used McAfee, Norton and AVG, with Norton being most recent, which I used for one year until my subscription ran out. Immediately after switching to MSE, a threat ignored during numerous full scans over the years was detected by MSE. I thought that was nice, but you are going to see threats detected by one product and not by another... that is just a fact of life and it doesn't necessarily mean one product is better than another with a single incident.

Fast forward to tonight when I installed a hard drive in my computer from a computer that a kid trashed, that wouldn't boot up. I ran a Malwarebytes scan on the drive that incidentally was protected by McAfee when the machine was running. Malwarebytes detected nothing on the drive, but as it scanned, various file hits triggered MSE detections of four threats. This could have been because MSE was first to detect and kept Malwarebytes from detecting the threat. Then again Malwarebytes was doing the scan and you would think it would be first, but I'll leave that up to the experts to decide. I just have a strong feeling MB, would have never detected these even though it is a pretty effective product.

I'm not saying MSE is better or worse than other products out there, but my recent experiences have left me with the impression that its detection database is quite good. From what I can tell the product doesn't exert a heavy load on your system and it leaves you alone until there is something worth paying attention to. I feel as secure with it as I have felt with any other product I have used.

The picture above is the detections from the scan today that caught 4 threats as well as the scheduled scan on my own PC last weekend that picked up something undetected for years.

Edit: Missed the difficulties you are having installing MSE. Are you running any anti-spyware products that might be causing the problem? If not you need to check your startups to see if some previous product has not fully uninstalled. I wouldn't ignore this message.
<TABLE WIDTH=95% align=center border=0 CELLPADDING=4">
