I surrender though, apparently washing your hands no matter whether it involves common courtesy of proper hygiene is silly and a waste of time to some folks. I have no response to that besides eww. I actually pulled a fellow back into the bathroom last week for that very thing. An asian bloke who worked at the place I was eating. I had finished, was in the bathroom to pay a visit and wash up.... he came in after me, took a leak and flipped it around.. and was on his way out the door to go back to work before I had finished washing my hands.

Didn't fly with me.. grabbed him by the shoulder and demanded he wash his hands if he didn't want to lose his job. He did.. wasn't happy, but did. I won't be eating there ever again. This behaviour is ok to some though, it seems.

Absolute pigs.

Some women prefer dirty men.

Grandpa worked for GE; Probably from 42-86. Back then the unions made everyone work hard. He had the pleasure of dipping his hand in PCB fluid - from transformers. (hence the cancer) But as you said, hard work never killed anyone.

My Grandma (on the other side of the family) is 97 - she should make it to 100 since most of her cousins did or at least close. Uncle Ace died a 99 and the aunt at 101.

I have no idea how though - none of them ate health and grandpa smokes like a chimney and drinks like it is going out of style.

That said, you're right; all those chemicals will kill anything on your hand. My grandpa used to work with that sort of crap on his hands, even got skin cancer a few times, but the old guy is still alive. (he's 89)

The world is gross, but at the same time, we have built-in systems to accept and deal with what is thrown at us.

And folks, my job requires me to wash my hands, at least 30 times a day. I often find myself just washing my hands out of routine, but I still feel that seeing as most don't damned if you do, damned if you don't (and that poll btw is bullshit, people don't tell the truth).

urbanriot : These days, thankfully people are considerably more hygienic. The H1N1 scare has really ramped up how well people consider proper hygiene and I'm noticing sanitizing stations and/or bottles of hand sanitizing lotion... and I'm seeing people use them.

On the other hand, at the bars I rarely dudes washing their hands... so it's a tough call. Maybe people do say they're more hygienic than they truly are; although the poll is anonymous, so why would 100 people lie?

Let me be the first to be truthful in this entire thread.

I probably do not wash my hands after I take a leak. After I take a dump, if it's a clean wipe, I won't bother washing my hands. If it's a bit messy, I'll wash my hands.

I hardly ever wash my hands outside of washroom use. Not even before I eat.

And to top it off, the last time I was sick was two flu seasons ago. Haven't been sick in over a year, god damnit. And I do not get flu shots, ever. Not getting one this year, either. And fuck the H1N1 flu shot. Unneccecary. I'd rather use the body that evolution has designed for me over billions of years.

Amazing how careful people are about microscopic bits of shit on their hands, and yet they will fucking SHOVEL shit into their mouths, and on top of that, they'll PAY to have that shit shoveled into their mouths.

FUCK. Eat right. Excercise. Drink water. Dress warmly. Don't eat shit.

Honestly, when society crumbles and there is no infrastructure left, all of you sanitary freaks will be the first to die of severe infections.

Seriously. Read the study.

I'll admit, that study gives a different reason for the declining health of Africans after they leave Africa to come to the West (racism and such), but the more obvious answer is they have built up more of an immune system in Africa, and then Western habits of cleanliness erode their immune systems.

But seriously. What has all that sanitary thinking done for you? Other than make your hands smell like a hospital all the fucking time?

Didn't your parents make you wash your hands before dinner? Brush your teeth after every meal? Shower twice a day? Wash your hands before leaving the bathroom?

I don't understand this common thought that is doesn't matter. Where are we, France? Do you shower once a month also, because stink is natural? Scary people you are, absolutely terrifying. :(

There's an SNL skit, Mike Meyers is maybe 'the deceased', where a guy is at the pearly gates having been recently dispatched. Guy is chatting up St Peter, wants to know the grossest thing he ever ate while alive, St. Peter wouldn't tell him saying it's be too gross. Guys asks for 10th grossest, then 100th, then 1000th. Finally at something like the 5182nd grossest thing St. Peter tells him what it was (which I of course forget).

But the point was a good one, IMO - we have no idea of the icky things we consume every day but if we think about it we can freak-out ourselves right out.

I'm sure I have unwittingly consumed dead skin cells from unknown women's labia and men's penises and urea and feces from each of them too.

Bacteria with unpronouncable names of Latin, unspeakable specieses.

But it's no big deal - personally I nearly never, ever, ever get sick with anything seasonal or similar and if it's such a problem people'd be dropping like flies given the prevalence of we not-always-washer's.

Thus excessive concern in this area, to me, makes no sense ... so homey don't play yer game : )

In fact I think that one day, given the prevalence of sometimes-washers, sensibility will prevail in what is the 'norm' and 'custom' too.

(Noteworthy though, is that the bar soap I have in my bug-out-bag is carbolic.)

So be a germophobe if you want, just don't expect me to be one too.

The best horror story I know is from an electronics conference (many engineers have poor hygiene and social awareness). It was urinals but no dividers, and some guy apparently shook so vigourously the drops flew around such as onto the poor guy from our group right beside him.

Noname : I remember that there's more germs in the kitchen that most people's bathrooms. I was shocked to hear that I wonder if people actually clean their kitchen well.

The point of washing your hands is reducing bacteria exposure. The less bacteria the easier to the immune system to fight it off. That's why with the swine flu they suggest that you wash your hands. There is a proper way of washing hands, it should take at least 30 seconds. I remember a cooking show where they tested their students to proper wash their hands. Afterward they had some kind of dye to see where they missed.

I have hand sanitizer that I use time to time especially if power goes out in my building. It is about reducing bacteria not completely getting rid of it.

I was going to post to the same thing lol. This thread is pretty funny. Most people are kidding themselves thinking that washing their hands with soap for 10 seconds does a lot to actually make them more sanitary. The truth is you need to scrub your hands and in your nails the way doctors do before surgery to really make a difference.

I admit I try not to touch the handles in the bathroom without using paper towel but some people seem to think there's a huge difference between the levels of germs in the bathroom compared to the rest of the world. If you work in an office on a computer all day, your keyboard is a highly concentrated area of bacteria and viruses.

They put hand sanitizer stations at the 2 entrances to the office where I work yesterday. I find this pretty funny and it really does nothing to reduce overall risk of getting something.

The truth is, the washing and hand sanitizer is mostly for peace of mind, not actual sanitation.

What happened to soap? Now all over the place you see this anti-bacterial crap. Is soap not good enough anymore? People worry too much, and this is why people get so sick. Your immune system is so weak and unused that when you actually do get sick, it's really bad. Instead of just a small cold that lasts a day, you get put out a week.

That makes no difference. As an example. I don't want you grabbing your penis, and then touching my buns (hamburger).. it is just a revolting thought. Wash your hands is common sense, and common courtesy.. end of debate.

I'm not stirring anything up, but I have to chime in my 2 cents... Sure there are some filthy people out there, but honestly there are a lot of other gross things than penis touching.

What about someone who gets an itch in their ear, sticks a finger in, now covered in wax and dead skin. Or wiping their nose, or rubbing ones eye... Even itching ones scalp and getting dandruff and any sort of possible things living up there.

To be honest, if the person is clean and showers daily, I'd much rather prefer the latter, over ear wax, snot, or dandruff... But that's just me I guess. :) (And that only includes taking a pee... If you sit down on a toilet, not only do you touch the stall doors, but wipe your butt, etc, and that's a lot worse/unsanitary than urine/penis stuff.)

I'd still appreciate washing hands though, Just thinking about all the other things that could be on ones hand(s) is a bit of a disturbing thought.

Our immune system can usually handle whatever crap (pardon the pun) comes at it, which is why you get sick - but not die. But, as said, it doesn't prevent you from getting sick.

I avoid lemon/oranges for my drinks. Although I do remember this bartender girl handling dirty dishes and money then scooping up ice with her hand to make some a drink....nice.

I don't think it really matters but I still wash my hands after taking a leak at work (rarely take a dump there). Where I work there are automatic urinals and faucets but you have to pull two doors to get out (bathrooms that have a no-touch 'winding entrace' are cool, they have them at my school).

Anyways there is an extra garbage can between the two doors to toss paper towel so you can pull the doors without touching them. I'm using it this winter with the H1N1 flu and all but I'm not sure if I'll stick with it.

I really doubt anybody has ever gotten seriously sick or died as a result of a bathroom door. "That bathroom door handle really did him in." Maybe if you had some serious hiv/aids or some shit but I'd like to think that most things that don't kill me would only make me stronger.

Not every bathroom is automatic either; hell, most public restrooms still use old style twist taps!

I recall my high school used the large round circular basins where water was released when your foot was applied to the lever but I haven't seen such a design since leaving HS.

jeffster1970 : I went to this washroom in Kitchener - a Greek restaurant in a new part of town, and they had no doors on the washroom. A hallway leads to the womens washroom and the other way to the mens. Good idea - one problem, the urinal is right in front of the door (the door frame) so if any woman went in the wrong direction by accident, she'd see everything. Also at a community centre, the had the urinals well hidden - however, the hand dryers had a mirror like finish so anyone walking by could see the reflection of some guy taking a leak - that was fixed real quick by putting special tape on the dryers - but it was a really funny oversite.

Anav : Concur, washing hands makes more sense before. I know I wear clean clothes and my own urine has a strong pH which is a killer agent in itself .;-). Its the handles on the faucets and the handles on doors to get OUT after its all said and done (not to mention seats and nozzles) that worry me.

At home, there's usually a 1% chance I don't wash my hands, and that's usually if I just get out the shower and have to take a leak. I'm already clean, and unless I splash myself (lol) I usually don't bother. But if I leave the bathroom after a shower, then come back in shortly after, I always wash. And if I don't actually wash with soap, I always use Purell.

When I'm at work on the other hand, I wash my hands just for the sake of washing my hands sometimes. Especially after having to deal with large amounts of money, or any boxes/packages, your hands just get disgusting.

anon : I remember a report on this (fecal matter) from last year when some hard hitting stomach flu thing was going around. The cause was due to fecal matter.

They conducted tests (swabs) of restaurants and all the other public places.

Worse offender on the list with the highest amount of fecal matter was... drum roll... Bars/restaurants serving drinks.

All the veggies or sliced fruit going into drinks (or hanging off the side of the glass) were the things most loaded with fecal matter.

Now this doesn't look good for bar tenders and waiters/waitresses/busboys who help slice that celery stick or piece of lime.

I had a similar situation at the Mandarin. I was in the waiting area, and from where I was sitting I could see behind the bar. One waitress put some stuff in the garbage, but the can was full. So she used her hands to force it in and push down on the garbage to avoid having to change it. Then, without washing her hands, she turned around and started cutting lemons for everyone's water, then mixed a few drinks, etc.

My table asked for water without lemon, and I haven't been back there (not that the food is good anyway).

I wash my hands at least 20 times a day, of course every time I got to the bathroom. If you just stand at a public bathroom you would be surprised how many guys don't wash their hands after going to the bathroom.

I was once in a restaurant where one of the kitchen staff was taking dump and walked out without washing his hands. I went back to our table, called our server over, cancelled our order for food and asked for the bill for our drinks. The owner/manager (never did ascertain which) asked why and when I told him, he was shocked and tried to get us to stay with an offer of free food. I have never returned to that place, nor will I.
