| My laptop doesnt work on planes....
So I have a relatively new Asus netbook (a few months old) that has a very weird problem; it doesnt work on airplanes. I have tried it a number of times, and each time I boot up while in the air I get the blue screen of death and the computer wont start. As soon as I get back on the ground its fine again. Any thoughts on what might be causing this?? It really stinks not to be able to use the computer on flights, especially given how small it is (10 inches) and the fact it has a 8 hour battery..... -- "If it's to be a bloodbath, let it be now. | anything you are doing differently up in the air that you don't do on the ground? anything different plugged in ? usb devices?
I can not think of any technical reason why it wouldn't work up in the air, outside of the above. -- Yes. the cat in my avatar is indeed mine. |

Cosmic ray exposure increases as you gain elevation in the atmosphere. Maybe the error checking in your RAM is bad enough already that any further exposure to cosmic rays causes it to cease functioning entirely. -- I am the Flying Photog, see my website accordingly named Flyingphotog.com. | reply to wifi4milez Must be something defective with it, cabin pressure is slightly lower (and heavily recycled) then on land, it could be that something expands or shifts enough to cause problems.
Does this one have the solid state hard drive or the mechanical version? They (Asus) market it as being travel device, it should work. |

| I'd thought of that - maybe the seating on the RAM changes as the cabin is pressurized. It should stay at around 8000 foot pressurization from before takeoff to after landing. -- I am the Flying Photog, see my website accordingly named Flyingphotog.com. User known formerly as zakooldude. |

| reply to wifi4milez My thought if it works fine on the ground is that on the plane if it has bluetooth or wifi enabled on boot up it is getting jammed on the plane and crashes. Try disabling/turning off these before you board. While it may seem a bit far fetched I assure you it isn't. -- Simple rules - no offsides, no intent to maim, everything else is all good! |

| »forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?pid=647213 has an interesting hard drive theory, but my idea about signal jamming is because they seem to know when devices are left on. My netbook is very aggressive about trying to latch onto wireless or bluetooth by default, unless I change settings. Might be worth trying before you mess with a hard drive change! -- Simple rules - no offsides, no intent to maim, everything else is all good! |

I will certainly try turning off the wireless, however that thread appears to indicate the problem is hard drive related. | So after reviewing the Asus forums I decided to call them. They at first tried to tell me the plane was using some sort of "jamming" technology that was causing the problem. That is of course nonsense, and I pointed out my other laptops work fine (as do all the ones other people are using). Finally they agreed there was a problem but wont send me a replacement; instead they want me to send in the whole computer. I explained that I needed to transfer the data off the drive first, but they werent willing to help. Pretty annoying to be honest, I will try again later and speak to a supervisor. -- "If it's to be a bloodbath, let it be now.
