| lug nuts loose, tire fell off
So my friend just had his tire fall off
it was just the tire, 1 of the 'studs'(dunno the real term) also broke off, which means 4 lug nuts just loosened up
the shop said the same thing, the 4 lug nuts became loose and the stress eventually broke that last one
is this even possible from wear and tear?, my friend hasn't had any work done, and tires haven't been removed at all......he said the noise started monday, and tire fell off on thursday
now, the other part, he just recently broke up with his girlfriend, she's.....well....crazy, were fairly sure thats a good possibility, but figured i'd ask if the above was possible |

| reply to Kayrac said by Kayrac :he said the noise started monday, and tire fell off on thursday 4 days without out making any effort to figure out what was wrong? I'd say an accident waiting to happen. I've had lug nuts get loose, and it's pretty darn obvious something isn't right that needs to be checked right now. |

Their is no "wear and tear" that causes the studs to break, and the wheel fall off, lug nuts do not magically get loose.
I almost find it hard to believe he could not FEEL something wrong, let alone just hear, granted I've never driven with the wheel ready to fall off, I cant believe that vehicle drove steady. |

1 edit | reply to Kayrac well he's not a car guy, so looking at his car is usually something he puts to the side :P
anyways thanks, i implied the whole ex thing to him, but now i may push it on him a little more
thanks guys
EDIT: matt it's a older car, but hasn't had anything done to it in almost a year, minus oil changes, but tires shouldn't be removed for that |

Anyone can get into a car and drive and they don't bother to check the fraken bulbs, or tire pressures or noises that get worse over 4 days and include vibrations telling you something is serious are just ignored because they drive a car literally until the wheels fall off.

That type of owner should be given a small plane to commute to the desert with as you know they won't do any pre-flight inspections or stick the tanks for fuel levels and then expect to pull over when there is a problem. One dauntingly huge drawback to that plan is that you can't readily pull over at 15,000 feet. -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? |

| But, but according to the OP, the TIRE came off, not the WHEEL!!!

I wasn't aware that lug nuts held tires to the rim!

Stupid me!!! |

| Yes Indeed!
A Wheel separation event is vastly different from a Tire separation event.
Laypersons use Tire and Wheel interchangeably.
It is like hearing "My car won't start".
Lets try again. Your car starter spins over the engine fine but the engine won't start OR the starter does nothing, not even a click when you tun the key? Two vastly different problems. -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? |

| reply to Kayrac I had a flat one day next to the psychiatric hospital. After pulling the wheel, a wind came up, and blew all 4 lug nuts down a catch basin. A kindly gent inside the fence wandered over, and wondered what was wrong. I told him my plight, and asked if he would call triple A for me.
He replied, "Why don't you just take one lug off each of the other wheels to get you home?"
"Great idea!" I said. "With a mind like yours, why would you be on the inside looking out?"
"I may be insane, but I'm not stupid," he said. |

I wondered every day if you made it home safely..I wondered so much they finally got around to releasing me so I could search for you..Really happy you posted this...What a small world.

I know for a FACT they can and do, the issue in this case is waiting four days to check a problem that had to be obvious, with handling and sounds. -- It is better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. |

| reply to LittlePiggie said by LittlePiggie :But, they can and sometimes do. No, mechanical torque does not suddenly release magically all on its own. It is *only* loose lug nuts that ever become further loose then fall off. If as you suggest an item under proper torque can loose its torque, then vehicle bodies would come off of their frames, doors would fall off of their hinges, and rear axles would come loose from their four links (2 upper and 2 lower arms for coil spring suspension) and drop the rear of the vehicle on the wheels jamming them into the wheel wells. -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? |

1 edit | reply to Kayrac LittlePiggie, If you use the proper fasteners and torque them to spec with a torque wrench they stay tight. I have been driving 40+ years and have never had a lug nut come loose on any of my vehicles.
I do have acquaintances who had wheels come off but that was immediately after being worked on by repair/tire shops. I do re-torque mine immediately when I get home after anyone works on mine. |
