| CDMA vs. GSM Range Question
I have always heard that it takes twice as many GSM towers to cover an area as CDMA towers. Is this true, or are people mixing up 1900mhz vs. 800mhz towers (because it is true that under the same circumstances 800mhz will go and penetrate about twice as far as 1900mhz).
If people aren't mixing things up, and it is true what I have read about CDMA, that it covers about twice as much area from a single tower as a GSM tower in the same location on the same frequency, does anybody know how or why?
And again, if this is true, do you think this would apply to newer versions of CDMA technology other than the CDMA2000 or whatever it is that we (like verizon and sprint) are using now? (Such as the WCDMA that HSDPA runs on and future LTE, because it is sort of CDMA, right?). Okay, thanks guys for any and all help on this one! | | wolfy339

First: GSM and CDMA are different channel access methods thus at least part of the range question is dependent on what frequencies are used by the carrier (generally 700 - 850 meg will go further and may penetrate farther in to a building than 1900 - 2100 meg as the 1900 - 2100 meg will tend to act like light). the rest of the range question has to do with power efficiency/effectiveness based on the encoding used by each channel access method. The only hard data I was able to come by regarding range so far in my research is located at »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison···tandards. Others with more specific knowledge should feel free to jump in. -- Computer: PIII/733, 512MB DDR RAM, ATI Xpert2000, 60&320GB HDDs, Windows XP PRO SP3, Mcafee 2009 AV/FW, Creative SB Live, Samsung SyncMaster 2443BWX, Verizon DSL 768/128 w/ Westell 6100 C90 | | diggs

| Thank you for that and that link. It was more a curiosity question than anything, but that is a great start and I didn't know half of what is on that page (like tower breathing and the fixed 35km distance for GSM?). I had never heard of any of that specifically. I have yet to read the references but I'll bet they'd provide even more information. Thanks wolfy. | |
