My friend wants to get a game console for his (going to be 8 year old) son for Christmas. The kids got 1 of those December birthdays so some games and accessories too.
He's in town this weekend so I said I would help  His internet kind a sucks because it's Direct TV and won't get any better because they live way out on a farm.
What's the best or the better console to get these days thinking of some longevety?

| For a young one, I'd say a Wii. Wiis seem to have more young kid friendly games then the other guys.
We have a Wii and a PS3. The PS3 gets more use due to it have a blue ray player and more adult games.
The wii is fun for active games like tennis, "jogging"... stuff like taat.
Mario cart, star wars with the lighted light sabers...
Kinda kool stuff as well for the Wii.

1 edit | I just wanted to say that mom's sort a a tight ass about violence (probably because my friend and I have been shooting guns and blowing up stuff since we were kids  ) and they have at least 2 50"+ HD TV's. |

1 edit | Then they also have to look at what games are available for each system. If one system or 2 systems mainly has adult and violent games then it would seem the choice would be a lot clearer.

PS3 has HDMI output for HD.
Wii currently has no HD tv support. |

I think I'd go with the Wii also. The games, in general, are more "family" oriented.

An 8 year old would appreciate the WII games better. Your friend would probably appreciate the multimedia features of the PS3 better. |

Also picture quality WILL be more important to my friend than his kid. My friend is an older dad, 52. I'm 56 and my kids are grown or in college so I don't know anything anymore.

Wii hands down.
I bought the PS3 for Blueray support, and that is about all that is good for. There are about 2 games that are descent and that is it.
Wii has great games and the virtual console has great past nintendo, sega, etc. titles. If he feels very savvy, check out homebrew. |

I disagree with an XBox breaking down quickly. I have 4 XBox 360s and "0" issues.
