The down payment pays for the car itself - ie $1000.

Any payment made from there on out from the buyer is gravy.

If they miss more than one payment, they have the right to repo the vehicle.

They take the car, clean it up again with a nice detail, clean up the scratches and start over again.

The other craigslist and carfax suggestions are great. You will find a better deal out there.

A dodge will not be my choice, especially with 122k and at $4k
you'll be paying top dollar for a car you know nothing about and does not have a good resume'

This site allows you to search all the craigslist listing in all the cities around you by a raduis that you determine instead of having to search each local listing individually.

I had a good friend who owned a Stratus for a few years and never had any issues with it outside of regular maintenance. The vehicle was taken out of commission in 2006 due to an accident and still was completely drivable but was totalled (bent frame I believe) by the insurance company.

I would stay away from buy-here-pay-here places. There is a good chance you'll get stuck with something that won't be reliable and then you'll be out your $1k down pym't and any payments you made.

Taking into consideration your current financial position/credit situation, I would look at your local Craigslist for Cars for sale-By Owner and look for something right around the $1k you would have to give for a down pym't at the dealer....Chances are good that a private seller will have a decent running car for $1k...it won't be much but at least it will be paid for completely and will fill your basic need of currently needing transportation.

I'm on Long Island and am constantly looking at car ads..Craigslist autos and trucks for sale by owner ( not by dealer ) always has a couple of cars in the $800.00-$1200. range that someone is just looking to get what they can for it...read the ads carefully and you will find something running ok but probably in need of some body work or the interior is not in all that good shape etc...

Bottom line is I would try like hell to find something running and not leaking fluids all over the ground for $1k instead of giving that $1k for a down payment on something that you will way over pay for at a buy here pay here place.

One plus about buying something for $1k or so is when things improve for you you can buy a better car and cars in that price range you will always be able to sell to someone else...
