[Cam] Pentax Image Stabil

I'm looking at upgrading my *ist to a K-x. The extra MP's would be nice, but it's the image stabilization that I'm really interested in.

I know Pentax was late to the whole IS thing, but how well have they done with it? I'm going to get a Bigma to go with it, and I'm curious how well Pentax's IS fares with a Bigma at 500mm. As good as any other camera manufacturer? Better? Worse?

Edit: I've been out of the photography loop for awhile, so I kinda don't know what all is going on anymore. Got some catching up to do.

Pentax has about the best in body IS there is. I have tested a K10D all the way upto 1200mm with a Novoflex 400mm f/5.6 + 3x TC and it worked fine. I use the Sigma 150-500mm OS HSM lens and love it.

I have 2 K10Ds and a K100D as well as a Bigma. It all works really well together! The IS is fine to the 500mm.

I don't think it can go much further than that, but I don't have any good quality glass that can go to the limits of the IS.

Thats good to hear. I was afraid being newer to the IS technology that they haven't matured it enough. IS is what my K-x purchase hinges on. While it has double the MP's of my *ist, it's not that gamebreaking to me. And the video recording is a novelty that I will rarely ever use.

I'm going to the 2010 GA Renaissance Fair and I want to take as little gear as possible this time. Last time I went I didn't know what I would need so I took an assortment of stuff. My back paid for it later in the day. So I'm aiming for a K-x with a Bigma for everything outdoors (and a monopod when needed), and an 18-50 for indoor and wide-angle work.

Looks like B&H just got the white bodied K-x in stock. Now I just gotta wait on my next paycheck to order.

Never testing it against N or C... I have NEVER been disappointed by the amazing stuff both my 10 and 20D have pulled off IS wise (with even A and M not just not just mod AF and the cost is infinatly less as it is aANY even antique manual, not just the latest greatest lense by lense and most expensive N & C both are for IS

Again you may be exposure auto limited... ANY lens even the most antique M with still be IS on a mod P DSLR... but totally functional. Bot Canon and Nikon can't even use some of their older lenses.

P has kept with the K mount... and any lens every made for a PEnatax back toat least the 1940's is still usable (OK adapter is needed for M lenses) but even early 60's K to today all work in their auto limitations.

And actually the cuirrent Petax K's can do stuff with the old just A (AE) lenses the old cams never could.... still semi auto... but much more than pure AE they originally were, yet not quite AF but very close in a non time critical sense.

That IS ACTUALLY a good THING. They do it real well.... but BIGMA you are sort of streatching the limits, but not extremely and BIGMA shots I have seen are really rather extraordinarily..

On the limits of the Pentax K's... but they never cease to amaze.

Work with any lens ever made for the P's vs on over and over again costly newest for C & N.

One of these days hope to have a Bigma myself.... sort of close though with a 100-400,, that being a cheapo though decent glass Phoenix produces some amazing results... and again like ANY lens you slap on a Pentax K, is IS/SR. Even at 1/40th sec at full 400 effectively 600mm.... maybe not RAZOR sharp but for the speed and FL pretty amazing.

Actually, after re-reading this, I don't see how they were late . They were the second company to offer it after Minolta.

Yeah and they sold their butts to SONY. Where as those are the 35mm film cameras I had and loved in the 70's.... no respect for them now.

There are no Minoltas anymore.... just more SONY chewing gum stick proprietary BS... with Nikon lenses.

Not to sidetrack, but Sony lenses are still made by Minolta optical engineers or by Zeiss. Nikon lenses are not on Sony cameras. The relationship between Sony and Nikon is related to sensors. I believe Sony manufactures Nikon's sensors in their facility to Nikon's specifications and maybe even on equipment provided by Nikon

Some assembly required, your mileage may vary, no pixels were harmed in the writing of this post. Brain cells, though, are a different matter. You want fries with that?

OPPS you are right.... the Olympus and fuji's are Nikon lenses.....

It really does get rather confusing but for a company like Pentax that is still their own, even if owned by Hoya.

And again a cam that is still historically their own and SLR lens EVER made for a Pentax still works on them... even back to pure M late 1940's-50's M lenses. Something C and N hasn't done and you want IS/SR ONLY modern lens by lens IS bought over and over again with no history.

Penatx appreciates their history and build on it. C & N want to shed theirs, and make you buy this years model over and over again.

Fyi, a Bigma is not even close to stretching the limits of the Pentax IS, sorry. I use the new Bigma, 170-500mm, lens on my K10D with no issues at all handheld.

I have also tested it using an old M42 mount Novoflex 400mm f/5.6 + Vivitar 3x TC to get 1200mm and it worked pretty darn well! Prolly only a 4x6" or may 5x7" print quality, but that was due far more to the use of a 3x TC then fault of the IS.

So a mere 50-500mm is not even causing the IS to break a sweat!

.... Well yes it would be full zoom would be right on the edge.... efective 750mm (at that range 50mm is nothing)

Unless the 7 has gone beyond the 800mm limit for the IS, or shooting in relatively bright light.

Uh, well, no it is NOT! The IS works up to 1200mm at the least, I have tested it, lol. Confucious say, "man who say it can not be done, should not interrupt man doing it!"

I use 500mm+ all the time with Pentax IS and it works flawlessly every time.

You need to rely on real world hands on experience not crap read. . Direct compensation settings may only go up to 800 or 1000 whatever, but the IS continues to function and compensate just fine for focal lengths above the settings.

Maybe you should actually test/try something first Hayward before spreading misinformation on how something doesn't work when in reality it works fine.

P.S. Not to mention even if setting only goes to 800mm, at 500mm you are still 300mm below max(if it really was but it is not), which is nowhere near maxing out the IS, lol.

Tested or option???

The 10 and 20 the manual F lens max is 800mm maybe the new 7 goes up to 1200.... and dependinmg on application even the older set to max 800 on the 10 & 20 1200mm might work OK but you are steatching things and like not as well as an 800. For same image

And of couse with any IS depends on how steady a shooter you are to begin with... it will never cure a shutter jabber, esp the longer FL you go..

If a 1200 AF lens again streatching things though might function without a warning.

Again as a 4-800 AF lens with a TC that reports the lens but not the mag factor. does OK but not as well as could be.

Huh!?

The max setting does NOT mean that is the max focal length you can use with the IS, lol. As I stated, I have tested it up to 1200mm and it works fine.

But even so, it goes up to 800mm, there fore @ 500mm you are not even beginning to stretch it to its max, lol, you still have 300mm to go just to reach the 800mm.

And that 800mm is just the max you can adjust it to, NOT the max it will work at. For longer focal lengths you set it at the max and shoot, it works fine.
