I just $iZzed my pants looks like VZW gets IPHONE!!! WOOT

A new report from OTR Global relayed by AppleInsider indicates that Apple is planning on manufacturing new hybrid iPhones that will support both Verizon's CDMA2000 network as well as the UMTS 3G network. Only the UMTS network is supported by the current version of the iPhone and is used by AT&T and much of the rest of the world.

Qualcomm's new hybrid CDMA/WCDMA chip offers the potential for a single, global iPhone that users can take to any major carrier, solving the network fractionalization problem. It also solves other issues that had served as roadblocks, including the issue of user confusion that would result from Apple selling separate CDMA and GSM/UMTS versions of the iPhone.
The reason behind building in such support would seem primarily to extend the iPhone's compatibility with Verizon in the U.S. The move is expected to take place by the 3rd quarter of 2010. Conveniently, AT&T's exclusivity contract with Apple is believed to expire in mid 2010.

The report also indicates the new model's screen will also shrink in size from 3.5" to 2.8" diagonally. Curiously, this is not the first time the possibility of a 2.8" iPhone has emerged with iLounge previously publishing photos of 2.8" screens that were believed to be for use in future Apple devices.

I think this still qualifies as "rumor".

I'll believe it when Verizon officially announces it.

Count me among those who would return to Verizon if they offered the iPhone. I'm not unhappy with AT&T, but I don't plan international travel until my son is a few years older. I'll take Verizon until then.

Doubtful. It's not the backhaul that is the problem, but the OTA bandwidth. CDMA not only makes much more efficient use of the available spectrum than GSM, but it is much more widely deployed. That is why AT&T is scrambling to overlay 850Mhz in the markets that are saturated.

Verizon offers "world phones" that are GSM & CDMA. They use GSM when roaming abroad.

3G on ATT is technically WCDMA. The next generation of CDMA that handles voice and data. The OTA would technically be very similar.

I have an iPhone on T-Mobile, but I would consider going to Verizon in order to get one when this one is old/fails/needs updated. Verizon's network is very good in LA. As much as I wanted an iPhone, I did NOT want to go to AT&T, which is *terrible* here.

I wish Apple would just sell the phone without any carrier attached to it. T-Mobile is now offering a bring-your-own-phone pricing and this would be an awesome pairing.

It's not. Verizon is able to fit more channels into each 5MHz slice than GSM. There was a great discussion on the front page about it, but I can't seem to dig it up.

Also, for the world coverage part, the article notes this is in fact a GSM/CDMA hybrid, so it will be one phone that can run on any network around the world, either CDMA or GSM.

another link to support the claim.

FYI so people know my stance, I am a current VZW customer on a blackberry Tour. Nothing would tickle my pickle more than getting an iphone to replace/consolidate my current ipod touch and XM radio.

I am all for it, and looking forward to Q3 of 2010, Starting to set money aside to get it without contract.

You would be able to and CDMA hates you too.

As a former Verizon customer, I'm wondering how much they would cripple the iPhone, not to mention nickel and dime you to death.

They'd probably do as much crippling as AT&T has done.

They don't appear to be crippling the Droid.
