emig5m : I recently bought the game Street Fighter IV online and it was a single layer DVD size file (4.34GB) and it downloaded at a steady 617KB/s on my 5M connection and never throttled down. Throttling would suck since I prefer to buy and download my games online now. Oh and I also bought my OS online with the digital download (Windows 7 at the Microsoft store).

Throttling isn't the way of the future with so many legit huge DVD+ size downloads. Hell... I've only downloaded the 32bit Win7 ISO and still need to download the 64bit for when some drivers get updates and I do some system upgrades I'll be jumping to the 64 bit version.

From now on, I'll most likely be buying and downloading most of, if not ALL of my digital content online.

Titus Pullo : I didn't think it would be throttling. I don't DL much, but I do stream netflix. But that's a bit different (staggered data streams). I thought the first time was a fluke, but then it happened again today downloading the 10.5.8 combo updater .dmg for a macbook. I think the file was nearly 800MBs. The first half went like a knife through butter, and then I watched it slowly and steadily drop from 900 - 1.2 down to under 200KB/s for the duration. Still not terrible, but if it had kept the starting rate I'd have been down in no time.

I think it ended up taking around 25 minutes or so. Maybe Apple's servers got hit.
--
--

Titus Pullo : The last two times I've DLd large files (Mac updates - 500MB+) I notice good throughput for about half the DL or so, and then the KB/s begins to drop considerably. I usually walk away when doing large DLs, but I was sipping coffee watching the rate out of boredom, and this is the second time in a month that I begin at 1.2mbps and after 300MBs or so of data, fall to 130 - 200KB/s for the remainder. Makes a 700MB DL take a quite awhile on a 10MB connection :uhh:
--
--
