This reminds me of a hit-run I witnessed many years ago. A driver rear-ended another car sitting at a red light and then fled in his vehicle.

The police showed up and asked if anyone had written down the license number of the offending vehicle. I told him I had not, but handed him the front license plate from it that had been knocked off in the crash.

Only if it had been noticed and reported. Tag and car don't match, makes things rather difficult.

IE stolen plate but not reported on car maybe reported stolen, but tag not.

I will give you an example actually expired plate was stolen off my long parked parts vehicle never noticed until I got a ticket for unplated vehicle. Though expired, still looks likea plate until cops get close enough to read the sticker or see its color.

I know that I should just claim it to the insurance co and move on since there really is no use pursuing it. But, without picture proof that this guy hit me (pics of his plate on my bumper + pics of damage to his front bumper if possible) there will be absolutely no chance anything will happen to this ass.

I am going to give the police the photos of his plate # on my bumper, the damage on his, and will wait and see what happens.

I don't think it's a stolen plate. It would have to be a stolen plate off of another Chevy Impala right from my town. @OP I doubt you took the wrong number down, chances are there's so many hit and runs now that the police are being stuck at dealing with other, bigger issues. They'll keep an eye out for it, but that's it. Use your police report, get the damage fixed by insurance. If they see the vehicle, or catch them bonus for you, bonus for them. Otherwise, sorry out of luck. Police will investigate and if they have enough proof they have the right person (or they cop to it) then a citation will be issues and the report written. You take the report to your insurance and if the other driver has insurance they should be notified. Otherwise you or your insurance company will inform them and get the damage fixed.

Hopefully - it takes you less than 3+ months to be made whole unlike my hit and run fun back in 1995.

I would expect them to take you with them to the address and examine the car the plate is on for damage and to ask you if you can identify the car at that address as the one that hit you. So I have a couple of questions. What is a good site to do my own searches? I see a couple of sites out there that look like you can do many searches for a yearly fee.

Also, can my DSLR brethren take a look at the license plate indention he left on my bumper to see if you can help me get the correct license plate number? I'm going to try to get a better pic in a minute as well.
