[hard drive] Hard Drive missing space

I picked up an IBM Deskstar hard drive at a yard sale. It is supposed to be a 40GB drive, p/n 07N7403. I installed it in an external HD case and reformated it. It only shows up as a total of 11.6GB total. Where is the other space on this drive? Am I missing something here?

Use disk management to look at the drive and see what it says - how many partitions and how big it sees the drive. It could very well have a pin places wrong or it could be damaged.

Okay, disk management shows 11.6GB active and 25.6GB unallocated. How do I change the unallocated section to combine with the active section?

Delete all partitions and then make one partition out of the whole drive - if there is more than one partition.

If there is only one partition then right click and there should be an option to unallocate I think (been awhile since I have done this). Then you can format the entire drive as one.

Great, that worked. I now have one full partition with about 37 GB showing. Thanks for your help. I can now upgrade an old computer I have with a larger HD. That worked perfectly. I appreciate your help.
