I wanted to know which Services are safe to turn off in Win 7 to give my system a little more zip and less strain. -- UCLA Only On A Clear Day-Class of '81 |

I have a OCZ Vertex SSD and while many of the tweaks are with that bit of hardware in mind, the suggestions are on-target for any system. |

Even with a mid-level machine (AMD Phenom II Quad Core, RAID-0 and 4 Gigs of RAM) things are blazing fast to the point it's not worth messing with.
But these days most MS stuff is off or not even installed by default. |

| reply to lordpuffer Control Panel, Program and Features tab
Look on the left where it says: "Turn Windows Features on or off"
Uncheck any box you don't need or aren't using.
As usual with Microsoft bloatware, there are a number of items running constantly that you'll never need. |

| reply to GILXA1226 said by GILXA1226 :None for me. Same here. With a 200mmx and 32mb of RAM canceling services made sense to me and a huge difference.. Now with a paltry 6GB of RAM and a quad core with hyperthreading I see no problem running (yikes) 58 processes. |

1 edit | reply to lordpuffer If security is an issue, closing certain services will also close the ports associated with that service. I always disable all services the system and myself will never use. Just another layer in my security approach, also, it lightens the load on resources. |

1 edit | reply to lordpuffer I would • strongly urge you to creating a restore point first before messing with services Then fiddle with features |

| reply to lordpuffer Turned off indexing and bluetooth. Must remember tomorrow to turn off tablet pc. Thanks for giving me the idea digitalfutur.
I might turn try turning off event viewer. Why monitor all that stuff that you never read. You can always turn it back on if you have a problem.
Right now my Win 7 is on a Netbook and I am just playing around with it so I don't really use it and I don't care if I screw up. |

1 edit | reply to lordpuffer There is of coure ole Black Vipers site. He always puts out a Services Guide. I know he completed a Windows 7 one.

I have used "some" of his suggestions in the past on my older XP systems and never had any troubles. Just have use some common sense and also know what you might need for your own specific configuration.

I have not turned off any service yet. I got i7, 6gb of ram and see no slow down with all the service running in background. Currently have 70 running with no problem. |
