1 edit | There goes the wallpaper
 If it's not one thing, it's another.......Gilda Radner |
Had a pinhole develop in a pipe in my downstairs bathroom. I really had not planned on re-doing the walls but I know I'll never match the wallpaper as it has been up since 1990. Shame a picture hung over the hole would not look out of place since the hole is an inch below the ceiling height.
I taped it for now and will repair it Tomorrow. Always something. |

| reply to NY Tel Surely not just 'friction' but likely impurities in the water that cause corrosion of the copper from the inside?
Agreed though, everything I've read about it says replace as much of the pipe as possible whenever this happens. KM -- Don't Lie - Be Kind - Realize your Potential |

Just curious as to how long it takes for the water to corrode a copper pipe to that point. Most of the water pipes in my house that are outside were replaced with copper about 30 years ago. Some are even exposed at various points (I live in the tropics - no freezing pipes worries) and they are in good shape. |

1) Wall thickness of pipe 2) Water PH 3) Impurities in pipe (big problem with new Chinese copper pipe) 4) Water flow 5) Water hammer
Probably lots of other things I'm not aware of.

1 edit | reply to printscreen About 45 years ago bought our "first house" a lake house north of NYC . Needed to connect to city water in the street ~ 50 yards from house. Needed to go under addition with pipe (in sandy soil). Couldn't dig under (it would undermine existing foundation).
Decided to pass copper pipe through an aluminum tube under the existing footer to the basement. Worked out OK but always wondered how this affected it long term since copper and aluminum are far apart on "galvanic table". Often wondered whether copper migrated to the aluminum and compromised integrity of copper line at some later date (30-40 years down the road)!

 After - all done. | Before. |
OK I decided this was way to close quarters for me to screw around with so I called a Plumber who cut a bigger hole in the soon-to-be removed wallpaper.
The pipe bends right above the ceiling and if we had wanted to replace the entire thing would have meant removing the ceiling etc. So for $100 bucks he fixed it. Guaranteed for 1 year etc.
Turns out he's a 4th generation plumber, lives in my neighborhood and also does computer and network installations etc. I now have a repaired leak and a good business contact for the other stuff. |

Guess that's why his rates are reasonable.
Of course I did answer the door in tattered clothes to make him feel sorry for me.... |

A plumber that also does networking, huh. Well I guess it makes sense, as the internet is just a series of Tubes.

P.s. Don't take this the wrong way, but I think this was a blessing in disguise. It is truely time to change the wallpaper!!! |

| Well in 1990, the wallpaper was "in" and it was a welcome change from what was there before with the previous owners.
There were holes in the wall everywhere and they covered them up with contact paper.
Go figure.
Will probably do a Wainscot halfway up the wall and paint the top part a nice neutral color. |
