| [Win7 hardware] Drive order. Does it matter? If Y, then ...
 SATA ports in pink |
I have a Gigabyte EP45UD3P that is supporting six channels of Intel's® ICH10R SATA Controller. (in pink) Not using the Gigabyte SATA ports at all.
These six Intel SATA ports are labeled as 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5.
Four drives will be used:
a. Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···22136284 Data storage, large files and long term. (movies, images, etc)
b. Western Digital VelociRaptor WD3000HLFS 300GB 10000 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···22136322 Working data storage and smaller files. (emails, typical stuff)
c. SAMSUNG Black 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 16X DVD+R DL 22X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA 22X DVD±R DVD Burner LightScribe Support - OEM »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···27151173 optical drive. No blu-ray yet. Maybe later.
d. Intel X25-M SSDSA2MH160G2R5 2.5" 160GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid state disk (SSD) - Retail »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···20167024 This will be the OS drive for Win7.
• So, does the order of the drives as connected to the SATA ports make any difference?
Which drive should be first, and so on? ~ To get best performance.
Thank you very much for helping a n00bish bird. -- Oh, I love the smell of fish. Guts, rotten, it's all good. |

1 edit | not really
normaly you start count with 0 and then ports on set in the row of 6 are on boards ones
each port is its own channel think USB make no difference what port its on only thing that MIGHT matter is with a SATA optical drive may need to be on 0, 1, 4, or 5 RTF for that one |

| reply to Ugly Since it is a ICH10R the R stand for RAID. You'll have to set up arrays. Put the SSD on chan 0. The velociraptor on 1 The 1 Tb on 2 The DVD on the Gigabyte SATA 0 position and enable that controller in BIOS.
Make each drive a single drive array.
The reason for putting the DVD on the Gigabyte controller is due top the reason that controller is not a RAID controller and it helps a small bit to have it on it's own (you'll understand when you set it in BIOS).
Pay close attention when you are setting it up in the RAID BIOS....it's easy to get it wrong due to the way they word things in there. |

2 edits | reply to Ugly I hooked up the system drive to "0", and the two storage drives to "1" and "2" on the red (in my case) SATA ports. Boot order can always be changed in the BIOS, if desired, anyway. |

As others have said, it makes no performance difference which ports the drives are connected to, on each controller. You do have 2 different controllers on that board, but there is little difference between them. If your primary (boot) drive isn't in port 0, you may need to change the drive order in the bios. -- Intel Q6600 @3400Mhz/GA-EP35-DS3P/4x 2048Mb G.Skill/WD Raptor 300Gb/3x WD20EADS 2TB/2x PNY GTX 260/Silverstone 850W/Custom water cooler |

1 edit | reply to Ugly Like others are saying it doesn't matter except for configuring RAID arrays and the boot order.
I think the secondary controllers could come in handy for optical or eSATA drives. My next rig might have RAID 1+0 so that would only leave two ports on the Intel controller. I think boards with eSATA backplate ports usually have them connected to the second controller since the ICH10R only has 6 and they usually put all of them on the board. |

| reply to Ugly The only thing that I know from personal experience, or that I think I know, that is:
When installing OSs I generally have to install Windows OSs on drive 0, and I even disconnect the other drives, because Windows will sometimes put the bootup stuff on a different drive that IT thinks is 0 even if it isn't according to the mainboard.
All I know is that, especially with triple boot with 2 Windows OSs and 1 Linux, I run into that problem sometimes. -- Happy Halloween/All Souls Day. Join Teams Helix and Discovery. | reply to Ugly generally, as others have said there really isn't much of a difference unless you use raid. there may be a bit of a difference in performance between controllers, but it should be minimal. You could look up reviews of the board if you choose to investigate it further. hope you enjoy that board, the EP45 boards have been really good to me |
