| [IE] Great solution for Microsoft, revert to IE7
Last summer when I tested the beta version of IE8 I discovered a problem using speech recognition software with it. The show numbers command didn't work correctly and there were also problems making menu choices by speaking the command.
At that time Microsoft suggested I revert to IE7 so they could work on the problem. Recently I installed Windows 7 and the only option is to run IE8. Guess what? The problem still exists even though the two are designed to work together.
I have spent over an hour with Microsoft support in the last two days and their solution is to uninstall Windows 7 so I can revert back to IE7! Sounds like a great support solution to me! No wonder people become disenchanted with Microsoft. I really don't believe the problem can be that big since everything works correctly in the older version. |

| The speech recognition software that is part of windows so it is a total Microsoft problem. It works fine everywhere else and in IE7.
In IE8 I cannot open menu items with recognition commands and when I open the pull down favorites menu if I say "show numbers" the numbers go behind the menu so I cannot see them!
I am handicapped and depend on speech recognition to use my computer for not like it's an option to use it. Needless to say I'm very disappointed in Microsoft's response to this issue. |

| Yes I have tried that, actually I started that thread also before I contacted Microsoft. I knew talking to Microsoft support in India would be an effort in futility so I tried other things first.
I'm open to try any suggestion that I haven't tried but I've tried lots of things already on my own and those suggested by others without getting positive results. |

| reply to Msradell Sorry to hear you are having so much trouble with it considering its importance to you in your everyday use.
In preparation for the Windows 7 Launch Party I hosted a couple weeks ago, I spent some time setting up Speech Recognition, tested it pretty thoroughly in IE8 and then demonstrated its use.
For grins, I fired up this morning and tried out what you seem to have an issue with. I hate to say it but it worked just fine for me.
I found that if I took the time to go through the tutorials (i.e., the training of the system to my voice) very slowly and carefully, then the feature was proven to be quite useful and accurate. In fact, this post is being written using the speech recognition feature. -- If things get any worse, I'll have to ask you to stop helping me. |

In the first case because a Microsoft product should work with a Microsoft product and secondly I really liked the overall feel and function of Internet explorer better than any of the others. |

| This is similar to running in no add-ons mode, but see if it helps any:
IE > Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > remove the checkmark in front of "Enable third party browser extensions" > OK then restart IE.
If that does not help you can re-enable third party browser extensions.
Also, consider performing a "clean boot" and see if that makes a difference:
»support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Follow Step 1 to clean boot and Step 7 to return to a normal startup. |

I tried your suggestion of removing a third party browser extensions and unfortunately it didn't make any difference either. I've already done they clean boot several times at Microsoft's but it also did not help the problem. |
